In addition to the base salary, this full-time position is eligible for an annual performance bonus as well as a longevity bonus.

Description :
The purpose of this classification is to train to operate and maintain equipment in preparation for State Water Treatment Operator’s examination. Duties and responsibilities include gaining experience as a Water Treatment Operator by monitoring plant operations and troubleshooting any equipment or issues, measures and calculate water composition; operates SCADA systems. Under strong supervision, reports to Lead Operator.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. - Trains to operate and maintain all water treatment plant equipment.
- Monitors plant operations regularly for proper operation and treatment. Makes any changes needed as directed by supervisor or Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
- Trains to recognize plant status. Troubleshoots and performs corrective actions in plant operations as directed by supervisor or SOP to ensure finished water quality meets or exceeds the standards of EPA and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
- Trains to perform all necessary laboratory work required for observation and control of the water treatment plant in order to meet treatment plant, State and Federal regulations.
- Trains to perform maintenance of equipment related to operations of the water treatment plants including calibration of feeders and instruments, repair feeders, pumps and etc.
- Trains to operate Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
- Trains to perform plant calculations for chemical dosages, chemical usage, flow rates, detention time, and all other calculations necessary for the proper operation of the water treatment plant.
- Trains to enter and update files on computer for preparing reports, spreadsheets, historical information, maintenance records and letters.
- Maintains sanitary cleanliness of work areas, the treatment plant and associated facilities. Focuses on areas directed by assistant manager.
- Maintains records in compliance to Federal, State and City regulations.
- Trains to work safely observing all OSHA, Federal, State and City regulations. Reports any accidents immediately to supervisor.
- Correctly wears appropriate personal protective equipment when required.
- Conducts behavior at all times in a professional manner to reflect positively on customer’s perception of the Town of Smyrna.
- Promotes the teamwork environment. Assists coworkers when necessary.
- Any other duties as assigned by supervisor.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs duties as required by the lead operator or the assistant manager.
- Required to work shifts as assigned by assistant manager.
- May have to work after hours in emergency situations.
- Reviews daily operational records to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to end of shift.
- Trains for Grade 3 and Grade 4 Water Treatment certification.
- Must be able to wear mandatory safety equipment when required (SCBA’s, full-face respirators, chemical resistant clothing, etc.).
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED with a background in algebra.
- Must have a valid Tennessee Driver’s License.
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geology, Agriculture or a related field in the physical sciences is preferred.
Expectations after hire
Once hired, you are expected to obtain either a Grade III or Grade IV certification depending on if you have a bachelor’s degree in the above listed areas. If you have an applicable bachelor’s degree, you can bypass the Operator III Certification and sit for the Operator IV Certification. Timelines are listed below.
- If no bachelor’s degree, you must obtain a Grade III Water Treatment certification within 24 months.
- If you have an applicable bachelor’s degree, you must obtain Grade IV Water Treatment certification within 18 months.
