The South Hadley Massachusetts Police Department is accepting applications for a vacant police officer position.
The South Hadley Police Department is an accredited, non-civil service agency with a long and proud history of serving the community. Our goal is to understand and serve the needs of the South Hadley community by providing the highest quality of police services, assisting in resolving problems, and promoting positive values through equitable and impartial policing consistent with and reflective of the shared values of the community.
The South Hadley Police Department consists of twenty-nine (29) sworn officers and seven (7) civilian staff which currently includes: Chief, 2 Lieutenants, 6 Sergeants, 3 Detectives, 2 SRO’s, 15 Patrol Officers, 6 Dispatchers, and 1 Administrative Assistant. Some speciality assignments include: Detective, SRO, CIT, DART, TRIAD, FTO, Drone Unit, CT River Task Force, Bicycle Patrol, Comfort K9 program (new), and many others.
We are looking for applicants who are willing and able to meet the duties and obligations of a South Hadley Police Officer. All applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- U.S. citizen; at least 21 years of age; High School graduate (college degree in criminal justice, related field, or military experience preferred).
- Possess a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a MA LTC.
- Possess strong oral and written communication skills.
- Thoughtful, self-motivated, disciplined, and service-oriented.
- Must be able to obtain certification by the Massachusetts P.O.S.T. Commission.
- Must be able to pass a physical fitness test based on Cooper Physical Fitness Assessment and pass the PAT (Physical Ability Test) requirements.
- Be able to pass a comprehensive background investigation, medical, psychological examination.
Note: any felony conviction or untruthfulness during any portion of the hiring process will be considered automatic disqualification for employment.

Status and Compensation
- Academy pay is $1,800 bi-weekly
- Probationary pay (1 year after graduation) is $53,047 ($27.20 p/hour)
- Current base salary: Step 1/Year 2 is $60,622 ($31.09 p/ hour)
- Current top salary: Step 3/Yr 15 is $ $70,300 ($36.05 p/ hour)
- Education incentive: Associates - $6,000, Bachelors - $11,000, and Masters - $12,000
- Additional pay for holidays, roll call, shift differential, longevity, and fitness incentive
- Detail rate is currently $58 per hour for outside vendors and $52 per hour for town departments
- Officer schedule: 4 days on/2 days off. Overtime available and occasionally required.
- Union position
