The Town of South Kingstown is seeking an experienced professional for the role of the Assistant Building Inspector in the Town’s Building and Zoning Department. The Department is responsible for providing information and guidance on, and enforcing, the State Building Code, the local Zoning Ordinance, and the National Flood Insurance Program; enforcing local ordinances and State laws affecting health, safety, and welfare; processing and issuing permits for construction; performing field inspections for code compliance; issuing certificates of use and occupancy; providing guidance on and enforcement of FEMA floodplain regulations; investigating complaints and issuing violation notices for noncompliance of regulations.
The Assistant Building Inspector, under the general direction of the Town’s Building Official, performs work to ensure that residential building codes and related standards are met. This position enforces State Building Codes, Property Maintenance Codes, local municipal codes, and zoning ordinances. This position is responsible for building plan review, issuing permits, issuing correction notices and citations, maintenance of records related to building and inspection activity and completing related reports, as well as performing on-site inspections of footings, foundations, framing, and associated building components. Duties also include working with the general public, builders, and contractors, and helping to resolve complex and sensitive issues involving commercial and residential buildings, building construction, and code compliance.
To be considered, candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and three (3) years of experience in general building construction, and the following professional certifications: as of hire date, or within three (3) months of employment, current International Code Council (ICC) B-1 certification for a Residential Building Inspector, capable of enforcing the provisions of the State Building Code SBC-2 (Residential); as of hire date, or within one (1) year of employment, current State certification as a Certified Eligible Inspector. Candidates already holding both certifications preferred; however, the Town will assist in paying for certification materials and testing for candidates with a strong background in the building industry that lack the necessary credentials upon hire. Candidates must have thorough knowledge of State building and general construction codes, thorough knowledge of construction methods and standards, and skill in applying knowledge of state building codes, zoning, and land use applications. Candidates must also have strong computer, data entry, and database management skills. Candidates must have strong communication skills, a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with fellow employees, the public, and others in a courteous manner, and to effectively deal with members of the public, builders, contractors, and others tactfully, respectfully, and effectively under adverse or difficult conditions. This position requires a valid Driver’s License, and successful completion of a background check.
This 35-hour per week position affiliated with NEARI local SKMEA starts at a rate of $30.36 per hour, and upon successful completion of the six-month probation period, increases to $31.13 per hour and is eligible for a full range of benefits including but not limited to medical, dental, paid time off (vacation, sick and personal time - as well as over 13 paid holidays) and pension benefits through Employees' Retirement System of Rhode Island.
