The South Kingstown Parks & Recreation Department is seeking qualified applicants for the role of Parks Maintenance Technician to support its mission to serve the needs of the community by providing enriching recreation experiences and quality facilities. The Parks Division is responsible for the care and maintenance of all Town parks and playgrounds, municipal grounds, athletic fields, school athletic fields, the town beach, and various public green spaces including the bike path.
The position of Parks Maintenance Technician requires knowledge in the operation of pickup and dump trucks with a trailer, riding mowers, hand mowers, trimmers, and a variety of related power and hand tools and equipment. This position requires the skillful, safe, and efficient operation of related tools and equipment and the ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with fellow employees and the public. Duties include mowing and edging grass; pruning trees and shrubs; cleaning up branches and other brush; weeding bed areas; planting grass, flowers, shrubs, and trees; leaf cleanup and other seasonal prep and cleanup; preparing athletic fields for use to include measuring, lining, raking and grading; setting up and breaking down facilities for events; cleaning and maintaining restrooms to include trash pickup, painting, as well as other repair work and maintenance duties as needed. This position requires someone with the ability to perform basic service of equipment, make minor field repairs and adjustments, and perform assorted tasks requiring manual labor for extended periods under unfavorable weather conditions when necessary.
Individuals in this position are considered essential and must be available for 24/7 on call status for all shifts to respond to a winter storm and requires the ability to drive and operate equipment during winter storm events and unfavorable conditions, often for lengthy durations, for plowing and sanding operations. On call status also applies to other inclement weather and emergency events as required. This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid RI Driver’s License and a CDL Class A, with all applicable type ratings, certifications and endorsements, or the ability to obtain same within 6 months of hire. The Town will cover costs and provide training and resources for CDL licensure. Candidates with at least one year of related experience preferred. A pre-employment physical and background check will be conducted prior to hire.
This 40-hour per week position is Monday through Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm with a half hour unpaid lunch with a seasonally adjusted schedule of 6:00am to 2:30pm from Memorial Day to Labor Day. This position is affiliated with Council 94 and starts at a rate of $25.19 per hour. Upon successful completion of the six-month probationary period, increases to $25.88 per hour. This position is associated with the Employee Retirement System of Rhode Island Pension Program, which earns up to 12 vacation days, 15 sick days and 3 personal days a year on top of 13 paid holidays as well as offers full medical, vision and dental coverage. This position is also eligible for incentive pay up to an additional $3.95 per hour depending on skills certifications attained in accordance with the C94 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
