Annual Range of Pay: $42,884 - $67,541

POSITION OVERVIEW

A Librarian I/Library Associate performs a variety of professional library duties requiring the application of library knowledge and excellent customer service skills. Duties include regular and direct interaction with the public to meet user circulation and reference needs; reader's advisory; planning, promoting, and conducting programs and outreach services; processing interlibrary loan requests, maintaining the Library’s book vending machine, SPARK, providing one-on-one technology tutorials to patrons, engaging in collection development; and maintaining statistical reports. Work requires considerable knowledge of standard library methods, procedures and practices. This position requires travel during the day to complete job duties, so a reliable and accessible vehicle and a valid driver’s license with a clean driving history is required. Work is performed under the general supervision the Assistant Director for Technical Services and is evaluated through conferences, observations, reports, and the general response of the public. Considerable judgment and discretion are required in performing all library function. This position will have responsibilities to open and close the library on a rotating evening and weekend schedule.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Works with other staff to plan, organize, promote, produce, and evaluate library programs and events for customers of all ages.
  • Produces reports, press releases, feature articles, calendar submissions, flyers, and other promotional, informational, and instructional materials in print and digital formats and platforms.
  • Maintains the technology and collection at SPARK, the library’s offsite book vending machine.
  • Provides accessible and comprehensive technology training and tutorials to the public.
  • Assesses customer information and service needs, provides appropriate resources, and provides instruction and assistance to customers in locating, accessing, and borrowing library print and electronic resources.
  • Engages in collection development tasks of assessing needs, analyzing usage, and making recommendations for selecting and deselecting materials for assigned subject areas, following guidelines of the library’s collection development policy.
  • Conducts readers’ advisory interview sessions with customers as appropriate and suggests titles and resources.
  • Researches and processes inter-library loan requests as required.
  • Performs copy and original cataloging for new and gift materials using electronic MARC record database and enters record into library database.
  • Creates engaging, interactive environments within the Library.
  • Greets the public as they arrive and makes them feel welcome.
  • Uses all software and hardware to fullest advantage to provide appropriate information to library patrons and conduct transactions.
  • Makes referrals to other staff and other resources outside the library as appropriate.
  • Shelves and maintains proper order and condition of all library materials.
  • Receives incoming telephone calls and emails, responding to inquiries or referring to appropriate staff.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Considerable knowledge of the principals, practices, and methods of Library Science.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to the public.
  • Considerable knowledge of common library policies and procedures, research methods, and the use of various types of informational materials and resources in the library.
  • Considerable knowledge of and facility with computer applications, including MS Office programs.
  • Ability to trouble-shoot problems with library public computers and automation software.
  • Ability to plan and present library programs effectively, including expertise in incorporating various library materials and media.
  • Working knowledge of spelling, grammar, and vocabulary.
  • Ability to produce written documents that are accurate, clear, and complete.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and to perform work requiring considerable detail.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team to accomplish common goals.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to handle cash drawers and reconcile accounts.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development.
  • Ability to promote interest in library services.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Library experience is required. Master’s degree in Library Science preferred, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an equivalent field required. Must have a valid driver's license with an excellent driving record.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to bend, reach, and lift up to 25 lbs. in order to handle book trucks, shelve books, assist patrons, and organize shelves.
