SANITATION TECHNICIAN
STARTING PAY: $41,080.00
The Town of Spring Lake is seeking to hire a dependable and hardworking team player as an addition to the Sanitation Department. This position will be required to share responsibilities in operating heavy, motorized equipment used for the collection of solid waste/yard debris as well as loading trash, recycling, yard waste and white goods into appropriate equipment. This position will operate under the direct supervision of the Public Building Director with general supervision performed by the supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The role involves operating a variety of heavy motorized equipment used in the sanitation industry, including rear load and knuckle boom trucks, to collect solid waste, recycling, brush, and white goods along specified routes in residential zones and the downtown commercial district. The driver ensures the timely pick-up of solid waste and recycling by manually or mechanically placing items in the truck, lifting and carrying trash bags, bulk items, and containers for disposal, and operating the packing mechanism to compact waste. The driver unloads refuse at facilities such as landfills, transfer stations, or recycling centers. The position also requires ensuring that all garbage and recycling are properly picked up, cleaning up scattered refuse, handling accidental waste spills, and ensuring that citizens' containers are replaced correctly without damage. Customer service duties may involve backdoor service pickups and tagging improper refuse containers. The individual should maintain a positive attitude towards co-workers and departmental goals while providing excellent customer service to residents. They are responsible for performing daily pre- and post-trip inspections on the truck, reporting any needed repairs, assisting with maintenance, and performing preventive maintenance tasks. The driver also maintains a clean vehicle, cleans behind the compactor blade, and ensures the truck and parking area are tidy. Additionally, they must report any safety or customer service issues, prepare and submit required reports, and complete daily paperwork such as weight tickets and inspection reports.
Additional Job Functions:
The individual performs various positional work functions within the Sanitation Division and Public Works Department as needed, ensuring flexibility and adaptability to departmental requirements. They must comply with all Department of Transportation and State regulations concerning the operation of commercial motor vehicles. The role may require working on weekends, holidays, during emergency situations, or at special events as necessary. Additionally, the individual is expected to perform any other job duties assigned by the Supervisor or Director.
Minimum Qualifications:
The candidate must have a high school diploma or equivalent, with at least one year of heavy equipment experience, preferably including solid waste collection. Additionally, the candidate must possess a valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B).
Physical Work Requirements/Work Environment:
This position requires very heavy work, involving exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, more than 50 pounds of force frequently, or more than 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, with physical demands exceeding those of heavy work. The role requires visual and audible acuity and the ability to perform tasks such as reaching above the shoulder, twisting, bending, stooping, repetitive movements of elbows (handling), wrists (fingering), squatting (crouching), kneeling, and climbing. The individual must be physically able to push or pull 50 pounds independently between 800 and 1000 times per day, lift 50 pounds from the ground to waist height independently 800 to 1000 times daily, and get in and out of the cab of a commercial motor vehicle 800 to 1000 times per day. The position also requires bending at the waist and knees between 800 and 1000 times daily and working in various environmental conditions, including heat, cold, snow, rain, wind, fumes, odor, and dust.
