The Transfer Station Laborer/Driver is responsible for performing custodial duties, minor maintenance, truck driving for hauling trash material and recyclables, operation of scale house and other miscellaneous duties in order to ensure that the facility is maintained in a productive, healthy, safe and sanitary manner. The Transfer Station Laborer/Driver operates trucks and equipment used for Transfer Station and other Public Works operations. May operate snowplow, snow blower and sander for winter operations. May be required to use mowers and hand tools for the maintenance of facilities. Must be able to direct/assist the public in a courteous manner and operate the scale house and recycling areas to facilitate an efficient and safe flow of traffic throughout the facility. Performs basic maintenance on equipment and will assist the mechanics with repairs.
May be required to perform work at other locations and/or departments including Highway and/or Parks as assigned. Must be willing to actively participate as a member of a Public Works Team and perform work in a courteous and professional manner.
Works under immediate direction of the Transfer Station Foreman and the general supervision of the Department of Public Works Director.
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Valid motor vehicle operator’s license. CDL Class A license required.
Must have experience with air brake class trucks and heavy equipment operations including loader, backhoe, and skid steer. (3 years minimum)
Must be a State of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection certified Transfer Station / Volume Reduction Facility Operator or shall obtain the certification within six (6) months of hire.
Must possess the ability to detect needed repairs and to assist in conducting repairs when needed.
Must possess the ability to conduct operations in a courteous and professional manner.
Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in equipment operation as well as the occupational hazards and safety precautions required.
Physical Requirements
The Transfer Station Laborer/Driver is a physically demanding position performed primarily in field locations. The applicant will be required to successfully complete pre-employment drug testing and applicable random drug and alcohol testing throughout employment. Frequently required to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time. Frequently required to handle or operate objects, controls, tools and equipment. Frequently the employee is required to reach; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; climb or balance. Must be able to see and hear. Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move up to eighty (80) pounds. The employee regularly works in outdoor weather conditions being exposed to cold, heat, rain, snow and wind. May work beyond normal working hours, weekends, holidays, and in other positions when necessary. Employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fire, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. The employee may be exposed to rodents, insects and other wildlife. The noise level in the field is moderate to excessive.
Work Schedule
This is a full-time forty (40) hour position. The schedule is 6:00 am to 4:30 pm Wednesday through Saturday with an alternate schedule of 8:30 am to 7 pm on Thursdays as needed and availability to report for weather related or emergency assignments as directed. This position is eligible for full benefits as determined by applicable bargaining agreement which currently includes health/dental/vision/life insurance, 457b defined contribution retirement plan with match, and generous paid time off.
