Kent Memorial Library is seeking a knowledgeable, tech-savvy part-time library clerk with a strong commitment to serving the public. Must have excellent customer service and communication skills to serve a diverse public. Performs a variety of clerical and Library support activities for the Library by assisting patrons and maintaining library materials and records. Serves the residents of Suffield in a customer-oriented manner that promotes a positive, professional image for the Town government.
Hours:
This is a part-time, non-union, non-benefits position requiring flexibility to accommodate evening and weekend hours. The schedule operates on a 3-week rotation, with the following hours:
Weeks 1 & 2: Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM
Week 3: Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM, and Saturday from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Please note that hours may be subject to change. This role may also require occasional extended hours, including participation in monthly evening commission meetings and additional evening or weekend work as needed based on job responsibilities.
Compensation and Benefits:
$16.35 per hour; this position is considered casual employment, part-time, and non-benefit eligible position.
Supervision Received:
Works under the general direction of senior staff members.
Supervision Exercised:
None.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Performs tasks at both the Adult and Children’s Circulation desks.
2. Collects materials from the book drop.
3. Checks library materials in and out, noting if they are damaged or have missing parts.
4. Registers patrons for library cards.
5. Prepares books to be shelved; maintains records.
6. Collects fines for overdue and lost materials and other miscellaneous fees (copier, printer).
7. Prepares carts for shelving and regularly shelves books and reads shelves.
8. Greets and assists patrons with questions via phone or in-person
9. Based on assignment, may assist with implementing and promoting special programs, events and exhibits, interlibrary loan, and processing library materials after they are cataloged.
Other Job Functions:
1. Perform other related work as assigned.
Education and Experience
Minimum Qualifications:
1. High School Diploma or the equivalent.
2. College degree preferred.
3. One (1) year of library experience or in a customer service environment.
4. Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
5. Relevant experience may be substituted for education attainment if deemed appropriate by the First Selectman.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Excellent interpersonal skills

3. Knowledge of children’s literature preferred
Special Requirements:
1. Valid, active Motor Vehicle Operator’s license preferred.
2. Must submit to pre-employment drug and alcohol testing as well as fitness for duty testing.

Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, postage machines, folding machines, printers, and fax machines. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
