JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, participates in the maintenance of assigned athletic fields, ensuring the provision of a quality, clean and safe recreational/work environment for citizens and staff. Work involves assigning duties to assigned workers according to daily, weekly, and monthly schedule to ensure all fields are ready for games to be played; ordering supplies as needed to carry out proper marking of fields; training workers on the correct and safe operation of equipment; maintains irrigation system on the complex grounds; maintaining bleachers, cleans as needed, and moves when needed; installs and/or repairs fences as needed; performing painting; and unloading and storing refreshments, supplies, and food for concession stands.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assigns tasks to assigned work crew to accomplish for the day to ensure all fields are safe and league/association dimensions are clearly and properly marked.
  • Checks league schedules to plan daily work schedules; ensures fields are ready on specific timetables.
  • Determines best methods to be used on each field to properly prepare fields for markings; ensures all fields are safe for games.
  • Ensures all trash is picked up, trashcans are emptied, new liners are installed; informs Recreation Specialist when dumpster needs to changed.
  • Ensures equipment is maintained in good and safe working condition.
  • Maintains records of all motorized equipment for oil levels and hours of operation to determine time for preventative maintenance; schedules time for preventative maintenance to be done with maintenance shop supervisor; and ensures equipment is clean and safe for repairs.
  • Maintains material safety data sheets for required materials used on a daily basis to prepare fields; takes inventory of field marking supplies, drying agents, cleaning supplies, bathroom supplies, field lights, scoreboard lights, and other miscellaneous materials; and provides inventory to Recreation Specialist for ordering.
  • Performs pressure washing of deck, buildings, and stands as needed.
  • Cleans and restocks bathrooms as needed.
  • Changes field light and scoreboard lights as requested.
  • Designs and fabricates special tools/equipment to aid in preparing fields in a safe, efficient manner.
  • Provides general supervising and instructions to personnel to perform skilled labor in the maintenance of the Town athletic fields and playgrounds.
  • Performs skilled labor in the performance of setting field to proper measurements on set days.
  • Prepares athletic fields to ensure that grade level on all playing surfaces is free of holes, water, and/or other debris that could cause injury to players or officials.
  • Ensures all field equipment is in proper working condition (such as bases, pitcher’s rubbers, goal posts, dugouts, restrooms, etc.).
  • Sets, repairs, and installs irrigation systems.
  • Runs electrical and water conduit.
  • Checks, repairs, replaces, or installs fences as needed.
  • Performs general landscaping maintenance including but not limited to planting flowers and trees, placing mulch, raking areas, etc.
  • Moves and repairs bleachers as needed to support activities.
  • Installs and maintains playground equipment, Christmas lights, and other equipment.
  • Performs various painting activities as needed.
  • Works with league and tournament directors to ensure fields meet their association requirements.
  • Installs and repairs public address systems as needed to support activities.
  • Serves as Town liaison with visiting high school officials, coaches, etc. to ensure their teams are properly supported on their visits to facilities.
  • Makes minor repairs to facility equipment.
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces parking place bumpers as needed; paints parking lots as needed.
  • Assists with Recreation Specialist’s responsibilities when needed.
  • Receives and/or reviews a variety of records and reports (such as league and tournament schedules, field conditions, different association rulebooks, and weather reports).
  • Prepares and/or processes a variety of documentation associated (such as daily work schedule and standard operating procedures).
  • Refers to league schedules, tournament schedules, rulebooks, material safety data sheets, policy and procedure manuals, codes/laws/regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.
  • Operates/utilizes various types of machinery, and equipment (such as four wheel vehicle, gas gator, six wheel diesel gator, tractor, computer, etc).
  • Uses a variety of tools (including chalk line marker, paint machine, irrigation system etc.); a variety of supplies (such as clay, field marking paint, field marking chalk, quick dry, mound clay, general office supplies, etc.); and a variety of computer software (such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, etc.).

 

  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals (such as Recreation Specialist, Parks and Recreation Director, co-workers, other Town departments, tournament directors, coaches/players, emergency personnel, and the general public).
  • Provides assistance as necessary in emergency situations and during afterhours or inclement weather conditions.
  • Assists officials to control unruly players, coaches, fans, etc. by escorting ejected individuals from complex and notifying police if needed.
  • Assists in unloading refreshment and food supply trucks for concession stand; stores food; and rotates old to the front.
  • Provides assistance to coworkers and/or performs those responsibilities as necessary to maintain standards of operation.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Requires a technical college diploma supplemented by one to two years’ experience in maintenance or related field; or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license.  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the methods, policies, and procedures of the Parks and Recreation Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Crew Leader – Athletic Field. 
  • Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. 
  • Knowledge of the methods and principles of the department as they pertain to athletic field maintenance. 
  • Knowledge of the various specifications and standards that relate to departmental operations and work activities and is able to ensure implementation and enforcement of same by departmental employees. 
  • Knowledge of the approved methods and materials used in the maintenance of parks and playgrounds. 
  • Knowledge of the responsibilities of individuals directly supervised to ensure accurate, efficient, and safe completion of assignments. 
  • Knowledge of the established standards of productivity and quality of work to be maintained in the performance of the job. 
  • Skill in the utilization of management principles in planning, establishing, and implementing procedures and standards for obtaining optimum production and cost effectiveness. 
  • Ability to properly and safely operate and maintain equipment, machinery, and tools used in maintaining and repairing athletic fields. 
  • Ability to offer instruction and advice to subordinates regarding departmental policies, methods and regulations. 
  • Ability to schedule daily activities and to establish short and long-term priorities in order to meet established goals.  
  • Ability to complete, process, and maintain a variety of records, charts and logs that are required in the performance of daily operations.  
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret blue prints and related maps and charts. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, crewmembers, members of the general public, and all other groups and agencies involved in the activities of the department.  
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions including smoke, dust, heat, cold, wetness, etc. 
  • Ability to handle required calculations. 
  • Ability to organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Tasks involve the regular and at times sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds) and occasionally heavier weight (up to 100 pounds).
