JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs preventive maintenance on all Town’s vehicles and diesel equipment. Work involves changing oil, replacing filters, checking fluid levels, lubricating moving parts, checking tires, replacing burned out lights, and checking and replacing belts and hoses.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Diagnoses and performs mechanical repair work on automobiles and equipment including repairing or replacing engines, fuel injection systems, electronic engine controls, electrical systems, brake systems, HVAC systems, computer systems, drive trains, differentials, etc.
- Performs mechanical repair work on light-duty diesel vehicles and equipment.
- Repairs law enforcement vehicles; installs and maintains specialized equipment on law enforcement vehicles as necessary.
- Performs light welding and fabrication work as needed.
- Performs bodywork, adjustment, and painting as needed.
- Performs a variety of preventive maintenance duties as schedules, including changing oil, lubricating, replacing hoses and belts, replacing brakes, checking lights, and tuning engines.
- Changes and repairs tires on vehicles.
- Conducts road tests after repair work is completed to ensure that all vehicles are mechanically safe and function properly.
- Picks up parts from vendors as necessary.
- Reviews work orders to ensure repairs are completed correctly and in a timely manner.
- Maintains records of work completed and parts used.
- Assists in maintaining a clean and orderly shop.
- Attends training, workshops, meetings, etc., as appropriate to maintain or enhance job knowledge and skills.
- Receives and/or reviews a variety of records and reports (such as vehicle on board computer, repair request by driver, vehicle information, vehicle history, part information, technical service bulletins, repair information, etc.).
- Prepares and/or processes a variety of documentation (such as repair order, parts invoices, new vehicle sheet, purchase orders, sign machine, work orders, code parts receipts, etc.).
- Refers to vehicle odometer, computer system, micrometer measurement, driver’s input, vehicle repair manual, part catalogs, technical service bulletins, shop computer, policy and procedure manuals, codes/laws/regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.
- Operates a variety of vehicles, equipment, and machinery (such as vehicle lifts, brake lathe, tire machine, multimeter, air conditioning recharge/recovery machine, computer, diagnostic equipment, emergency and rescue vehicles, light duty equipment, etc.).
- Uses a variety of tools (such as air tools, mechanic hand tools, air conditioning gauges, torque wrenches, machine body buffer, pneumatic tools, etc.); a variety of supplies (such as engine motor oil, vehicle filters, vehicle tires, shop air system, cleaners and solutions, general office supplies, etc.); and a variety of computer software (such as Ford ID computer program system, Dozier, Mitchell Repair Program, Ford Repair Web, Sign Plotter, Internet, etc.).
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals (such as Fleet Maintenance Manager, other Town department personnel, coworkers, sale representatives, and the general public).

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent, prefer a technical college diploma, supplemented by two to three years’ experience auto repair and maintenance experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license. May be required to possess a commercial driver’s license (A, B, or C with specific endorsements may be required). Must have successfully completed required courses and certification(s) as deemed necessary by the Town.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Vehicle Maintenance Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Automotive Technician II.
- Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
- Knowledge of and skill in the maintenance and repair of a variety of heavy equipment, light equipment, vehicles and small-engine machinery.
- Knowledge of the standard tools, materials, and practices of the trade.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Knowledge of how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
- Knowledge of how to read and interpret equipment manuals, specifications, etc.
- Knowledge of basic mathematics.
- Skill in the care and use of required tools and equipment.
- Ability to comprehend, interpret and apply regulations, procedures, and related information.
- Ability to work in adverse environmental conditions, including exposure to heat/cold, wetness, humidity, dusts, dirt, machinery hazards, vibrations, noise, odors, smoke, electrical currents, toxic agents, etc.
- Ability to working under stressful conditions as required.
- Ability to prepare required records and reports in a timely and accurate manner.
- Ability to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision.
- Ability to use independent judgment in performing routine tasks.
- Ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
- Ability to offer training and assistance to fellow employees as necessary.
- Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be physically able to operate a truck, welding machine, drill press, back hoe, wrecker, mechanical, welding, machine tools, automotive test equipment, etc. Must be able to exert up to fifty pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to twenty-five pounds of force frequently, and/or up to ten pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
