Job Description:
Hourly pay rate will vary by candidate depending the amount of applicable prior school nursing experience. In the absence of the School Nurse assigned to the building, the Substitute School Nurse will: Provide preventive routine and emergency health services to facilitate the student's optimal physical, mental, emotional and social growth and development. Identify problems and disabilities and provide such services as health education, referring and care in order to help prevent serious health problems. Support the education process by working to assure the health of the students.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
- Promote and protects the optimal health status of school-age children.
- Communicable diseases containment, prevention and awareness.
- Provide health education and anticipatory guidance to students, and families in making decisions that affect health.
- Participate in health education of students and families when needed, and referring to and collaborate with the proper school and community resources concerning health problems affecting school age children
- Communicate with parents about student illness and changes in condition.
- Document health visits and communication pertaining to student health in Electronic Health Record.
Knowledge of (including but not limited to):
- Principles and practices and current trends of professional nursing.
- Principles and practices of the special field of school nursing.
- Current practices for common childhood conditions and chronic conditions especially asthma, allergies, diabetes & seizure disorders
- Common community agencies working in collaboration with school health offices such as Trumbull Health Department, DCF, Mary J. Sherlach Counseling Center, local Pediatric Practices, Connecticut State Department of Education.
- State and local laws relating to school health, social issues and nursing practice (State of Connecticut Nurse Practice Act).
- Trumbull BOE Policies and Department of Nursing Policies and Practices
- Typical growth and development of school-aged children aged 3 to 21
Ability to:
- Assess the physical, mental and environmental health of students: appraise health needs as they relate to educational environment and cultural background in accordance with state and local mandates. Perform health care required for student need based on nursing assessment.
- Must hold a current and unencumbered Registered Nurse License for State of Connecticut.
- Current certification CPR for the Professional Rescuer
- Successful completion of Town of Trumbull and Trumbull BOE background check requirements.
- Minimum of one-year experience in pediatric nursing in a school setting preferred, but may substitute alternate nursing experience at acute care facility, public/community health setting or home health care.
- Computer skills
