The Town of Valdese is currently seeking a Street Maintenance Worker to perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks sometimes involving heavy manual work requiring the use of hand tools and light equipment. Work involves patching potholes, cleaning ditches and catch basins, installing culverts under driveways, constructing sidewalks and curb and gutter, sweeping sidewalks, etc. Employees must be able to perform strenuous labor and occasionally work under unfavorabl e weather conditions. Assignments are repetitive in nature and, once learned, can be carried out with little direction. Work is performed under immediate supervision.

Education and Experience Requirements: Graduation from high school or equivalent.

Special Requirements: Valid North Carolina Driver’s License. Possession of, or ability to obtain within 60 days, North CarolinaClass B CDL.

Compensation and Benefits:The Town of Valdese offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.The hiring rate of this position is $26,300. STREET MAINTENANCE WORKER I

I. General Statement of Duties

Performs routine unskilled and semi-skilled manual work in the repair and maintenance of streets.

II. Distinguishing Features of the Class Employees in this class perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks sometimes involving heavy manual work requiring the use of hand tools and light equipment. Work involves patching potholes, cleaning ditches and catch basins, installing culverts under driveways, constructing sidewalks and curb and gutter, sweeping sidewalks, etc.Employees must be able to perform strenuous labor and occasionally work under unfavorable weather conditions.Assignments are repetitive in nature and, once learned, can be carried out with little direction. III. Duties and Responsibilities Essential Duties and Tasks

• Patches streets using tar, asphalt, concrete, and other materials; digs holes and trenches with shovels; assists with placement of posts and pipes; replaces dirt and tamps for compaction.
• Cleans ditches and clears undergrowth from rights-of-way using swing blades, pitch forks, and other hand tools; loads and unloads gravel, dirt and other materials, tools and equipment; loads tree limbs, brush, leaves and trash on dump truck for removal.
• Shovels, rakes and tamps asphalt; checks and cleans manholes and catch basins.
• Operates trucks, dump trucks, tractors, scrapers, loaders, rollers, tampers, and air hammers in street preparation and maintenance work; checks fluid levels on equipment and vehicles operated and performs other simple maintenance on automotive equipment.
• Removes snow and ice from sidewalks and parking lots; spreads sand on intersections during snow and ice storms.
• Sweeps and cleans sidewalks, and work areas; sews grass seed.
• Performs other manual labor tasks as assigned.

Additional Job Duties

• Performs other duties as assigned by Assistant Public Works Director and Crew Leader

IV. Recruitment and Selection Guidelines Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Some knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in general construction and maintenance work.
• Some knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to use common hand tools and operate simple machinery and equipment.
• Ability to perform heavy manual work over extended periods of time and under varying weather conditions.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and superiors.

V. Physical Requirements

• Must be able to perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
• Must be able to perform medium work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and /or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects

• Must possess visual acuity necessary to read maps and work orders, operate a vehicle and a computer terminal and to read and prepare reports including the analysis of data and figures

VI. Desirable Education and Experience

• Graduation from high school/GED and considerable experience in Street Maintenance.

Special Requirements Possession of a valid appropriate North Carolina driver's license. Possession of, or ability to obtain within 60 days,North Carolina Class B CDL.
