The purpose of this class within the organization is to perform a variety of entry-level manual maintenance duties required to preserve or improve the safety, cleanliness, appearance, and appeal of the Town by maintaining, cleaning, repairing, constructing and installing the Town's asphalt, concrete, water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, traffic, signage, signal, landscaping, trees, buildings and other infrastructure.
Work unit assignment determines primary and essential functions of position.
Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions, or indoors depending on individual work assignments. Work environment includes exposure to noise, dust and traffic with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, lifting heavy objects and operating equipment.

Shovels and sweeps loose millings back into the hole while the paving unit is operating; shovels millings into a loader as the hole is excavated; shovels asphalt while it is being applied; shovels asphalt for a ramp or pad; lutes asphalt to smooth and level it out to remove holes and bumps in order to create a smooth road that is more resistant to potholes and cracks occurring; uses a gas powered or hand tamper; uses a roller after basing and capping asphalt.
Ensures that all signs and stands required for the work zone are on the sign truck prior to starting a job; checks that containers and dispensers are filled/fueled daily, e.g., water tank, extra gas and propane tanks, and air compressor; drives the sign truck and sets up the appropriate advance warning signs or closes down a section of the road; notifies designated office in Town Hall about road closure; directs and maintains work zones by flagging and setting up an appropriate work zone and using a variety of signs and cones.
Reports, assists in repairing and controlling water breaks; assists in flushing and repairing fire hydrants; excavates holes and trenches; assists in repairing sewer lines; assists in inspecting rodding and cleaning manholes and sewer mains; works with crew to collect leaves using rakes and a vacuum; delivers leaf mulch to residents.
Learns to use or uses such equipment as a hydraulic sewer cleaning truck, rodder truck, asphalt zipper, backhoe, generator, roller, jack hammer, and snow plow.
Enters and works in confined spaces, using personal protective equipment and operates under OSHA standards for excavation and confined space entry.
Sweeps, mops, scrubs, vacuums, and buffs floors, hallways, dusts and cleans furniture, equipment, fixtures, window sills, cleans, strips, waxes and floors, washes interior and exterior windows railways, and blinds; collects and removes wastepaper and trash from offices, halls, and restrooms; washes walls, windows, mirrors, light fixtures, and drinking fountains; disinfects toilets, wash bowls, and urinals.
Collects trash and yard waste, picks up leaves and brush, empties containers and dumpsters, receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as identifying what is in each can. Refers to rules and regulations, policy and procedure manuals, codes/laws/regulations, publications and reference texts.
Operates a variety of non-commercial vehicles and equipment. Uses a variety of tools such as, but not limited to, brooms and shovels and a variety of supplies such as safety supplies. Respectfully interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the supervisor, co-workers, and the general public.
