What are the responsibilities and job description for the Department of Natural Resources Officer position at Town of Wareham?
The Town’s Human Resources Office is accepting applications for the full-time (40 hour) position of Department of Natural Resource Officer/Animal Control Officer. The rate of pay for this position is in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Unit currently in effect and is based upon 40 hours a week/52 weeks a year. The position will require holidays, weekends, nights and on-call. Education and Experience: Associate’s Degree in natural sciences or related field; or at least two (2) years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in seamanship and boat handling, shellfish aquaculture, wildlife management, and small boat repairs.
Job Duties: Include but are not limited to: performs all the essential functions of the Animal Control Officer; patrols the harbor/waterways and enforces boating laws, bylaws and safety regulations; issues citations/warnings for violations; monitors the docking, anchorage, and mooring of vessels; assists boats in distress; responds to inquiries and complaints from boaters; assists in the repair, renovation, upgrades of maintenance waterways facilities/equipment; enforces laws/regulations regarding shell fishing, inland fish and game; checks fishing, hunting and firearms licenses; enforces daily bag limits, ammunition and clothing requirements; and similar or related work as required. Employee works on local waterways, in all types of weather. Employee may be required to use: light trucks, medical equipment, hand tools, boats, off-road vehicles, compact construction equipment, office equipment and all types of firearms.
Requirements: Must have a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License, have successfully completed, the MPTC Police Academy or completed the Bridge Academy as required under MPTC with the ability to carry firearms, be CPR and First Aid certified, must be certified by POST or have the ability to be certified, complete all Massachusetts Harbormaster Certifications including Captain’s License, and have completed or have the ability to complete the Massachusetts Animal Control Certification Academy. Must be available to work nights, weekends, holidays and emergency call backs. Subject to CORI/SORI, pre-employment physical, drug test and RMV check. Must have the ability to interact with the public in a courteous and pleasant manner.
