PUMP STATION OPERATOR-WATER DIVISION

Description

Position performs skilled manual work in operating a T2 groundwater treatment system and maintaining pumping station machinery and equipment. Does other skilled labor, snow removal and landscaping work as required.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Operates and maintains a T2 groundwater treatment system in accordance with all State and Federal regulation
• Collects routine and special water quality samples in accordance with standard industry practices and government regulations. Samples include total choliform, VOCs, SOCs, PFAS, lead, copper, nitrates, nitrites, HAA5s, THMs, iron, manganese, perchlorate and others as needed.
• Accurately records readings of water flow, pressure, chemical usage and the related times and dates
• Inspects, cleans, lubricates pumping station machinery and equipment, such as electric motors, pumps, chemical feed pumps, valves and other related equipment
• Operates and maintains a chlorine chemical disinfection dosing system
• Assists in overhaul repair of station machinery, including motors, pumps, valves and related equipment
• Monitors a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for any system irregularities or equipment malfunctions
• Maintains clean and orderly condition of station and treatment plant facilities, machinery engines, pumps and related equipment
• Maintains landscaping of all assigned facilities and locations with the use of a riding zero turn lawn mower, a weed trimmer, a leaf blower and other related equipment
• Operates light to heavy duty equipment in snow removal operations, including snow blowing and plowing of roads, driveways and parking lots.
• Works rotating weekend and holiday shifts
• Works emergency overtime as needed
• Proper use of personal protective equipment and following appropriate safety precautions while handling hazardous chemicals or performing other hazardous work
• Ability to follow safe working practices and standards, including the ability read and become familiar with safety data sheets (SDS)

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Work requires high school graduation or equivalent plus two years experience in the same or a related field or any equivalent combination of education and experience required to perform the essential functions of this position. Must have familiarity of the operation and maintenance of engines, pumps, valves and related equipment. Ability to troubleshoot malfunctioning pump station equipment.

Special Requirements: Possession of a valid driver’s license required,. Employees working in Water Treatment must pass the examination for a T1 Operator in Training within 365 days of appointment.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skill: Ability to understand and follow stated operating and maintenance procedures. Ability to work knowledgeably, efficiently, and safely with all types of hand and power tools, and motorized equipment around water operations and facilities. Ability to understand the principles of hydraulics, pumping, electricity, carpentry, and basic machinery. Ability to read, understand and follow written and/or verbal instructions. Requires the ability to maintain cooperative relationships with co-workers and supervisors and work independently with minimal supervision.

Physical Demands: Work requires agility and physical strength, such as moving in or about construction sites or over rough terrain, or standing or walking most of the work period. Must be able to work in an environment subject to continuous interruptions and background noises; climb onto ladders, platforms, and equipment; work in all weather conditions; operate equipment requiring hand and eye coordination and mechanical aptitude; access and negotiate difficult places and varied terrain; lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Motor Skills: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to use arms, hands and fingers to: handle, reach and feel objects; operate tools and controls. Able to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and smell while performing, supervising or inspecting work, including construction projects often on uneven ground. Able to engage in frequent walking, bending, standing, squatting, climbing and occasional sustained physical effort.

Visual Demands: Position requires the employee to routinely read documents and reports for understanding and analytical purposes. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and ability to focus.
