Camp Counselor
The West Springfield Park & Recreation Department seeks qualified individuals to fill Summer Camp Counselor positions. A Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for supervising campers and keeping them safe. Their duties include teaching children and teenagers outdoor and recreational skills, overseeing and planning camp activities and learning and implementing emergency protocol efforts to ensure the protection of campers.
Examples of Duties
- Develop, lead, and actively participate with children in various age-appropriate activities.
- Be able to effectively monitor behavior while using appropriate discipline techniques.
- Help to maintain a safe, clean summer program site.
- Ensure a high level of program quality and work to establish a positive relationship with all program participants and their families.
- Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision.
- Serve as a positive role model to youth and teens.
- Help write and implement a weekly schedule for your camp group.
- Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities each week. Activities may include crafts, nature, sports, games, field trips, swimming, etc. This includes time spent on the bus.
- Identify and respond to camper behavior issues.
- Communicate with parents about participants' experiences and report concerns to the Camp Director.
- Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
- Know, enforce, and follow safety guidelines/emergency procedures associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers safety and their whereabouts at all times.
- Render first-aid when necessary in view of the department's policy.
- Arrive to work on time, as scheduled.
- Have full availability for training prior to camp.
- Must have the ability to lead and participate in indoor and outdoor camp activities which include, but are not limited to, physical games and activities, bending, lifting, walking, standing for long periods of time, swimming, team building initiatives and game and room set up which may include lifting up to 30 pounds.
Qualifications
Must hold valid CPR/First Aid Certifications at time of hire.
Minimum Age Requirements: 16 years of age by June 20, 2025
Supplemental Information
Shift: Interested in working a schedule that does not include evenings or weekends?
- 8:45am - 4:15pm, Monday through Friday, with the opportunity for additional hours per week. This position is seasonal (June 20, 2025 through August 1, 2025). Must be available to commit to working a minimum of 4 weeks out of the 6 weeks of programs and attend orientation on Friday, June 20, 2025.
