Position Overview
Under the general direction of the Lifeguard Supervisor, the Lifeguard is responsible for patrolling and observing the area in front of and around the Westerly Town Beaches. Initiate water rescues in various conditions, provide first aid, regulate activities, and educate the public about water safety. Must be able to work Holidays and Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
· Observing and monitor beach patrons while viewing ocean conditions.
· Initiating water rescues in various situations and conditions; providing first aid care for minor injuries or care until EMS personnel arrives, along with giving CPR, and using an AED if necessary; completing incident reports as necessary.
· Assisting in maintenance of lifesaving equipment and facilities; coordinating the purchase, maintenance, and upkeep of all facility equipment related to lifeguarding and ocean safety.
· Processes information requests for the assigned division.
· Other duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications & Experience
· Must be sixteen (16) years of age.
· Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the essential job functions of this position.
Licenses and Certifications:
· A valid driver’s license.
· A valid Rhode Island Surf Lifeguard Certification Card.
o This card indicates that the lifeguard not only has passed the RI DEM state surf test, it also guarantees that the guard is also in possession of a valid, unexpired lifeguarding & first aid certification issued by an appropriate agency (YMCA, American Red Cross) that denotes they have received a minimum of 21 hours of instruction.
o The surf card also indicates that the lifeguard is currently certified and in possession of a valid, unexpired CPR/AED certification issued by an appropriate agency (American Red Cross, American Heart Association) The course includes one-person adult, two-person adult, child, and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including obstructed airway training, AED, BVM, and use of barrier devices, this course is accepted by the Federal Government and or by the state of Rhode Island.
Salary is $18.00 / hour
