CUSTODIAN

Town Maintenance

Position Summary

Works under the general supervision of the Custodial Supervisor.

Performs routine functions, requiring the exercise of responsibility and independence in the performance of maintenance and cleaning duties.

Semi-skilled manual work relating to the cleaning and maintenance of facilities, grounds and equipment; all other related work, as required.

Essential Functions

Maintains facilities inside and outside; cleans and disinfects rooms, furniture, washrooms, toilets; dusts furniture, file cabinets, office equipment, and counters; vacuums and cleans rugs; washes woodwork and windows; cleans and disinfects floors; cleans tables and sinks; cleans windows.

Collects and disposes of refuse; picks up and disposes of litter; cleans and lines trash receptacles.

Replaces lights

Performs minor repairs, as needed.

Responsible for closing and securing building at the end of the business day as well as opening and closing the building for various meetings. Sweeps and maintains hallways and stairways.

Performs shipping and receiving activities; deposits mail daily.

Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.

Job Environment

Work is performed under variable, and sometimes unpleasant conditions with exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, chemicals, near moving mechanical parts; noise levels range from moderate to loud; potential exposure to diseases, bacteria, and human waste; grounds maintenance work may involve exposure to variable weather conditions. Required to work outside normal business.

Operates vacuum cleaners, buffers, snow blowers, electric drills, and other custodial equipment; may operate automobile.

Has occasional contact with the public.

Errors could result in damage to facilities and equipment, create hazards to personal safety, cause some monetary or property loss.
Physical Requirements

Constant moderate physical effort is required, with occasional strenuous effort demanded. Position requires extensive walking, reaching, standing, stooping and climbing when performing functions.
Occasionally required to lift, move, and/or push furniture and equipment which may weigh 30 pounds, or more. Physical agility required to access all areas to be cleaned. May spend entire shift engaged in physical activity. Specific vision requirements include close vision and distance vision.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill

Knowledge. General knowledge of cleaning materials and methods, including precautions for using toxic and caustic cleaning chemicals. Knowledge of the care and maintenance of light and heavy equipment, mechanical and electrical equipment, and power tools. Knowledge of grounds keeping, landscaping, snow removal and ice control methods.

Ability. Ability to read and write English. Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks in a timely fashion.

Skill. Basic skills in performing preventive maintenance on buildings and equipment.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
High school diploma, or equivalent; three years of experience in custodial and maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Pay: $54,818.40 - $58,729.90 per year
