What are the responsibilities and job description for the Transfer Station Attendant position at Town of Whately?
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Responsible for operation of the transfer station including accounting for bag sales and deposits of cash and checks, assists residents with trash disposal and recycling, maintenance of appearance of transfer station, scheduling of trash hauling and other related duties. Coordinates with other transfer station staff/back-up staff to appropriately fill waste and recycling rolloff containers and schedule hauls.
Regular contact with the general public to obtain or furnish information. Educates residents using the transfer station on the proper disposal of trash, recyclables, compostables and use of the swap shed.
Oversees source separation of all recyclable and compostable materials. Encourages residents’ participation and enforces compliance with requirements of proper disposal of trash, recyclables, compostables and use of the swap shed. Serves as a resource for recycling questions and disposal problems.
Performs related work as assigned.
Desired Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
High School diploma or G.E.D. or equivalent
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must be able to take, comprehend and carry out verbal and written instructions.
Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments and to service equipment.
Ability to perform duties under adverse weather conditions.
Ability to deal with the public in a courteous manner.
Knowledge of email communication, hydraulics, and basic organizational skills helpful.
Tools and Equipment Used:
The job requires the ability to operate equipment including compactor controls, calculator and a telephone.

The employee must occasionally lift and carry weights of 50-75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus to discern labels, etc.

The employee works under field conditions with some exposure to bad weather and a variety of hazardous conditions such as dust and odors.
Work Schedule:
The work schedule is generally 15 hours per week. The position requires the following schedule (currently):
Tuesdays 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (no lunch break)
Saturdays 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (no lunch break)
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $21.19 per hour
Expected hours: 12 – 18 per week
