JOB SUMMARY:
The Collection System Operator is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the municipality’s wastewater collection system. Ensure that the sewer infrastructure, including pipes, pumps, and lift stations, functions efficiently and safely to protect public health and the environment. The operator will also be responsible for monitoring system performance, identifying issues, and performing routine inspections and emergency repairs as needed. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate, maintain, and repair collection system infrastructure, such as lift stations, pumps, motors, valves, level indicators, float switches, relief valves, utility holes, grease traps, generators, odor control units, and other equipment.
- Read and record flow meters, gauges, hour meters, and other information pertinent to the collection system.
- Install portable generators and/or bypass pumps, as necessary.
- Conduct regular inspections of the collection system to identify any signs of wear, blockages, or failures.
- Maintains shop, storage sites, equipment, tools, vehicles, and other work areas or equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
- Operate and maintain equipment such as vacuum trucks, CCTV inspection equipment, and other specialized tools.
- Maintains accurate records of work performed.
- Enters data into an automated work order tracking system.
- Inform and interact with the public and customers in a courteous and professional manner.
- Participate in on call/standby program and work various shifts including occasional overtime, weekends, and holidays.
- Responds to emergency calls and emergency duties during non-working hours within 30 minutes of notification, including some weekends and holidays.
- Assist other utility personnel as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
- Strong understanding of wastewater collection systems, including troubleshooting and repair techniques.
- Knowledge of safety standards, environmental regulations, and best practices in wastewater management.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong critical thinking skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights, as required.
- Physical ability to perform manual labor and lift heavy objects.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
- Valid driver’s license.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of two years’ experience in wastewater collection system operations or a related field preferred.
