PURPOSE:
The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of the municipality's wastewater treatment facilities to ensure that wastewater is treated efficiently and safely in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations. The Operator plays a critical role in maintaining public health and environmental protection by ensuring the effective treatment and disposal of wastewater. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operate and monitor wastewater treatment plant equipment, including pumps, valves, mixers, aerators, filters, and chlorination systems, to ensure optimal treatment of wastewater.
- Perform routine inspections of plant operations to ensure the equipment is functioning properly and efficiently.
- Collect samples of wastewater at various stages of the treatment process for testing and analysis.
- Conduct laboratory tests (e.g., pH, turbidity, BOD, COD, chlorine residual) on wastewater samples to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and water quality requirements.
- Adjust chemical dosages, flow rates, and operational parameters to ensure proper treatment and meet discharge permit requirements.
- Monitor and maintain accurate records of daily operations, including test results, chemical usage, maintenance activities, and system performance.
- Respond to alarms, malfunctions, or system failures promptly, troubleshooting issues and making necessary adjustments or repairs.
- Perform routine maintenance on plant equipment, including cleaning, lubricating, and replacing parts to ensure optimal performance.
- Assist with the cleaning and maintenance of plant facilities, including tanks, basins, filters, and pump stations.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations governing wastewater treatment and disposal, including meeting National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit requirements.
- Follow safety protocols and environmental regulations to maintain a safe working environment for oneself and others.
- Provide input and support for plant improvements, upgrades, and changes to operational processes.
- Participate in ongoing training to stay current on industry best practices, technology, and regulatory changes.
- Respond to emergencies and after-hours calls related to plant operations when needed.
- Assist in the preparation of operational reports and documentation for regulatory agencies, as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
- Valid driver’s license.
- Understanding of wastewater treatment processes, equipment, and regulations.
- Ability to troubleshoot and perform routine maintenance on wastewater treatment equipment.
- Basic knowledge of water quality testing methods and procedures.
- Familiarity with safety protocols, including the handling of hazardous chemicals and materials.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment, with attention to detail.
- Strong organizational and record-keeping skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Basic computer skills for monitoring and reporting on plant operations.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of vocational or technical training in wastewater treatment or a related field preferred.
- Previous experience in wastewater treatment or environmental services is preferred but not required.
