NATURE OF WORK
As a member of the CRC-Expansion Division, individuals in this position facilitate childcare operations at the Community Recreation Center by greeting guests, supervising children, and providing quality customer service in the CRC drop-in Child Care Center. This position is responsible for the safety and supervision of children placed in the care of the Town of Windsor Community Recreation Center while the parents are participating in on-site recreation activities or classes.

Individuals in this position are required to perform work in a manner consistent with and exemplary of the town’s PRIDE philosophy and the town’s Equal Opportunity Employment policy.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
No supervisory responsibilities or control exercised.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Individuals work under the direct leadership of the Child Care Supervisor to carry out assigned duties, functions, roles, and projects in both routine and complex circumstances. Individuals report directly to the Membership Coordinator.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The individual in the Child Care Worker role is assigned specific assignments, job duties, scope, authority, responsibility, roles, and requirements as determined by the town, department, division, and pursuant to laws, regulations, and practices. Individuals in this position must be able to successfully perform, be responsible for, and/or assist in the fulfillment of many job functions and duties, with or without reasonable accommodation.
The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all-inclusive:
  • Provides positive, fun, and safe experiences to the children, ages 12 months to nine (9) years old, in their care.
  • Receives and greets parents and children, and answers questions regarding childcare guidelines and the childcare center.
  • Independently monitor, interact, and supervise children who participate in the recreation center drop-in childcare and the outdoor playground.
  • Promotes a safe and healthy environment.
  • Follow and enforce the department's childcare and outdoor playground policies.  
  • Interact and play with children in activities that can include the following actions: running, reading, drawing, coloring, talking, walking, and singing.  
  • Leads and instructs children in games and other activities.  
  • Provides comfort to upset children.  
  • Contacts parents if a child is upset or ill.  
  • Take out and pick up toys.  Checks that all toys are clean and in operating order. Help with guidance issues. 
  • Pick up and carry children as required.  Assist children in the restroom facility. Notify parents if a diaper requires changing. 
  • Interact and play with children in activities that can include the following actions: running, reading, drawing, coloring, talking, walking, and singing.  
  • Maintain appropriate records.
  • Provide feedback to parents. 
  • Assists with general maintenance and cleaning of childcare room, equipment, and toys.
  • Communicates with supervisor concerning cleaning supplies and program material needed.
  • Develop positive relations with customers; communicate recreation programs information to participants and parents.
  • Enforces facility policy and procedure by informing guests of existing policies.
  • Observes guest use and informs supervisor of improper facility or equipment use.
  • Resolves administrative concerns by applying appropriate policies and procedures through positive interaction and involvement with the facility team and the public.
  • Handles and reports to the supervisor any problems, concerns, or emergencies that arise during the shifts.
OTHER DUTIES
Depending on organizational need, additional duties may include the following:
  • Operates a personal computer including associated software programs.
  • Performs related duties as established by law/ordinance or reasonably directed by the town.
  • Assists other town departments, as necessary.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND FORMAL TRAINING 
  • Must be at least 16 years old 
  • Previous childcare experience performing similar childcare services preferably in a facility setting and customer service duties, including a high degree of public contact and customer service relations in a fast-paced environment preferred
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES
  • Must have current child and infant CPR/1st Aid and babysitting certifications within three (3) months of hire
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Knowledge: General working knowledge of childcare operations. Basic knowledge of first aid/CPR, blood-borne pathogens, and safety procedures.
  • Skills: Skill in the administration of first aid and CPR. Proven customer service skills. Must possess skills of good judgment, patience, and decision-making in handling difficult situations involving childcare guests.
  • Abilities: Ability to interact positively with young children. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and procedures; work well with culturally diverse people; establish and maintain effective working relationships with children, fellow employees, and the public; handle emergency situations; work well with young children and discipline, lead, and interact with same in a positive manner; communicate effectively in English, verbally and in writing; organize activities in order to complete tasks in accordance with priorities, address multiple demands, or meet deadlines; focus attention on tasks, which may be complex, routine, or repetitive, without losing concentration or becoming distracted by external activities; adapt to interruptions, unusual and/or trying situations, or changing priorities; and work with and care for children ages 12 months and over.
MATERIALS and EQUIPMENT USED 
Materials and equipment used include, but may not be limited to the following:
  • Equipment:  Position requires the use of a variety of equipment: computers, tablets or other digital equipment, digital cameras, copiers, printers, scanners, fax machines, and telephones.
  • Materials:  Position requires the use of a variety of materials: basic household cleaning materials.
 


WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.

The physical activities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

The physical requirements of this position are considered Medium Work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.

The employee is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (as in typical office or administrative work); subject to noise.
This position is not considered safety sensitive because the individual does not operate a commercial motor vehicle, as a regular function of his/her daily job duties.
