Environmental Education Intern
The Town of Windsor, CT seeks an enthusiastic and friendly Environmental Education Intern to work at Northwest Parks nature center during the summer season. The parks mission is to help all visitors to connect with nature at our 473-acre campus featuring native forests, fields, wetlands, heritage breed farm animals, and 12 miles of hiking trails. The intern will gain experience in a variety of informal education methods and interpretive techniques for different audiences and will develop and deliver programs for visiting groups of children.
This is a paid, full-time temporary summer position starting in June and ending in August 2025. Start and end dates are flexible based on availability. Employment is for a period of 10 weeks maximum. The hourly rate is $17.50 per hour. Weekly work schedule is Monday Friday. Onsite housing may be available.
Responsibilities:
- Work with park educators to develop educational programs for visiting groups from offsite camp programs; lead group programs as scheduled.
- Interact with Camp Foxfire summer staff and students; support activities for all ages on special topics.
- Interact with the public in the exhibit hall and outdoor facilities. Lead informal interpretive presentations.
- Provide assistance with animal care in the Nature Center and the Animal Barn as needed.
- Assist with general daily operations and customer service in the nature center.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old
- Currently enrolled in a college or university degree program
- Have completed at least one year of study in environmental education, biology, natural science or a related field
- Have a strong interest in natural history and teaching
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences
- Willingness and ability to do active work outdoors in all types of weather
