Definition: Under direct supervision, performs a variety of work in the construction, modification, maintenance, and repair of Town infrastructure, including streets, parks and landscaped areas; uses and operates a variety of manual and power tools and light to heavy power driven equipment; and performs related work as required. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives direct supervision from the Maintenance Supervisor. Exercises no direct supervision over staff. Class Characteristics: This is the entry-level class in the public works maintenance series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents with basic maintenance experience learn Town infrastructure and facilities, use of tools and equipment, and public works practices and procedures. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.

When performing streets maintenance assignment: Performs construction, maintenance, and repair activities of Town streets and roads, right of ways, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, landscaped areas, traffic and street sign installation, repair, and reflectivity, pavement markings, and storm water and drainage systems, to ensure safe and efficient access for the public.Participates in asphalt maintenance and repairs, including grading, scraping, and leveling surfaces in preparation of areas to be repaved; fills and patches pot holes, cracks, and service laterals; repairs curbs and gutters; removes debris from the streets and right of way.Removes and replaces road surface material and debris and loads, transports, and unloads stones, gravel, dirt, supplies and equipment.Installs, repairs, and cleans storm channels, catch basins, and culverts.Places traffic control and warning signs and serves as a flagger and sets up lanterns and barricades.Participates in concrete maintenance, including attending to trip hazards, demolishing and removing concrete, and forming, pouring, and finishing sidewalks, sidewalk ramps, curbs, and gutters.Performs a variety of maintenance duties of landscaped areas such as street medians, islands, and sidewalks, including planting, irrigating, fertilizing, and maintaining trees; performing weed abatement using a chemical sprayer; irrigating, aerating, mowing, and fertilizing turf; and maintaining and repairing irrigation systems.Maintains and repairs traffic signs, including installing sign posts and signs in accordance with federal, state, and Town codes.Performs graffiti abatement duties, cleaning graffiti and notifying appropriate Town staff as needed; inspects Town for graffiti vandalism, uses appropriate chemicals and high-pressure equipment to remove graffiti, and operates paint truck to repaint as necessary. When performing the parks maintenance assignment: Performs maintenance and repair activities of Town parks and related facilities to ensure safe and efficient access for the public, including parks, athletic fields, facilities, and buildings.Performs a variety of landscape maintenance duties, including planting, irrigating, fertilizing, and maintaining flowers, shrubs, hedges, and trees; performing weed abatement; irrigating, aerating, mowing, and fertilizing turf; clearing debris from walkways, fields, and other facilities; picking up trash and emptying receptacles.Performs a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of irrigation systems; installs, adjusts, repairs, and inspects irrigation systems; determines watering needs; changes and adjusts heads and maintains controllers; participates in irrigation system installation and maintenance projects.Inspects, maintains, and repairs playground equipment, athletic fields, and other related parks equipment and facilities.Maintains parks and landscaped areas in a clean and safe condition, including picking up trash, removing graffiti, and cleaning, repairing, and maintaining restrooms and fixtures.Participates in pest control measures, mixes and applies chemicals to trees, shrubs, grass and flowers; controls weeds, insects, and plant diseases.Paints Town buildings and facilities.Ensures the safety of Town's pool and related facilities for public use; tests the temperature and performs chemistry tests including chlorine levels, pH values, and total alkalinity of the pool water; adds chemicals as required; performs cleans drains, filter tanks, and filter screens; maintains required records.Maintains and repairs Town facilities and buildings by performing carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, and mechanical repair work. When performing all assignments: Inspects the Town for safety issues, structural integrity, and possible future work projects and programs, and appropriately marks areas that need to be repaired.Operates and maintains specialized vehicles and a variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment, including loader, back hoe and skip loader, road grader and hand and power tools related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of Town infrastructure, buildings, and related facilities.Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.Implements traffic safety control plans, including setting up delineation and signage around work sites and special events to ensure safe conditions for the general public and Town workers.Maintains public facilities, shop area, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition, including securing equipment at the close of the workday.Provides oversight to assigned Work Release crew.Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.Maintains accurate logs and records of work performed and materials and equipment used.Responds to after-hours emergencies.Assists in the set-up and removal of equipment and facilities needed for special events.Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
WORKING CONDITIONS May be required to work weekends and be on call. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, to operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle and visit various Town sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 100 pounds with the use of proper equipment. Environmental Elements Employees work in the field and are exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives and contractors in interpreting and enforcing departmental and Town policies and procedures. DISASTER SERVICE WORKER All Town employees are, by State and Federal law, Disaster Service Workers. The roles and responsibilities for Disaster Service Workers are authorized by the California Emergency Services Act and are defined in the California Labor Code. In the event of a declaration of emergency, any employee of the T own may be assigned to perform activities which promote the protection of public health and safety or the preservation of lives and property. Such assignments may require service at locations, times, and under conditions that are significantly different from the normal work assignments and may continue into the recovery phase of the emergency. If a "Local Emergency" is declared during the employee's shift, the employee will be expected to remain at work due to the emergency needs of the community. If a "Local Emergency is declared outside of the employee's shift, the employee must make every effort to contact his/her direct supervisor or department head to obtain reporting instructions as a Disaster Service Worker.
