Job purpose
This position is responsible for conducting fire and life safety inspections, records management, building/development plan reviews for relevant life safety items, and public education presentations as set forth by the Fire Marshal. This position also conducts fire incident investigations to determine cause and origin.
Duties and responsibilities
Working under the direction of the Deputy Chief of Fire Prevention, this position requires execution of specific technical duties, which include:
- Carry out building and site reviews of proposed projects for relevant fire and building code compliance
- Inspections of pre-existing buildings
- Maintain records and prepare reports on activities and projects
- Carry out task functions as assigned by the Fire Marshal
Qualifications
This position requires a demonstrated technical knowledge of the principles and practices for delivering fire and life safety services. It requires the knowledge the equipment and techniques used in firefighting. It requires working knowledge of the fire protection systems commonly employed in buildings to alert occupants and protect property. It also requires a valid driver's license and the physical ability to carry out all off-site inspection and investigation duties. This position requires the inter-personal and decision-making skills to effectively instruct staff personnel and interact with the public in a professional manner.
Minimum education qualification of a high school diploma or equivalent is required. Additionally, Indiana Department of Homeland Security Fire Inspector I/II certifications are required. Additional certifications from the ICC are preferred.
ICC Fire Inspector I certification will be required within the first year of employment.
Ability to obtain OSHA 10 Certification with the first year of employment, updated every 5 years.
Working conditions
Fire Inspector activities require the ability to be a friendly, helpful contact for the citizens and visitors to Zionsville; maintain confidentiality regarding proposed projects, fire department inspections; maintain a traditional level of professionalism while engaging in code enforcement division activities, including inspections. The nature of the work requires personnel to be judicious and equitable in treatment of all citizens and business and owner representatives while striving to uphold the highest levels of customer service.

Position is physically demanding and may require climbing, lifting (150 pounds), pushing, pulling, bending, kneeling, stooping, and running.
