SUMMARY:
The Director of Materials Management is responsible for overseeing and managing the entire lifecycle of medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, and equipment within the hospital. This role ensures that all departments have the necessary resources for patient care while maintaining cost-effectiveness, compliance with healthcare regulations, and operational efficiency. The Director leads a team to optimize the procurement, storage, inventory control, and distribution of hospital materials, contributing to the overall quality of care and hospital operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Oversee the hospital’s inventory of medical supplies, medical devices, and equipment to ensure they are readily available for patient care
- Implement efficient inventory control systems to track stock levels, expiration dates, and usage rates
- Forecast material needs based on patient volumes, upcoming procedures, and historical usage data
- Ensure that materials management practices comply with local, state, and federal healthcare regulations (e.g., FDA, HIPAA, OSHA, Joint Commission standards)
- Monitor the storage, handling, and distribution of controlled substances, medical devices, and sterile items to meet regulatory and safety standards
- Ensure efficient storage practices that maximize space utilization and ensure easy access to critical materials
- Manage the flow of supplies from receiving to distribution to ensure that all departments have the necessary materials for patient care
- Use hospital management systems (ERP or Materials Management Information Systems) to monitor and report on inventory levels, procurement costs, and supply usage
- Provide regular updates to senior leadership regarding inventory status, spending, and any material shortages or critical needs
- Analyze trends in supply usage and implement corrective actions when necessary to optimize material management
- Analyze material costs and work with hospital leadership to identify cost-saving opportunities
- Develop and manage the budget for materials management, ensuring that materials are procured within the allocated budget and cost-effective solutions are implemented
- Lead the procurement process, identifying cost-effective suppliers for medical supplies and equipment
- Negotiate contracts with vendors, ensuring competitive pricing, quality products, and timely delivery
- Develop training programs for staff to ensure they are knowledgeable about inventory systems, regulations, and best practices
- Conduct performance evaluations, provide coaching, and foster a culture of continuous improvement
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Strong understanding of healthcare supply chains, inventory management systems, and the unique requirements of medical materials
- Extensive knowledge of hospital materials management, including medical supplies and equipment
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with a focus on staff development and performance management
- Analytical skills for budgeting, cost control, and performance tracking
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments and with external vendors

- Establish and maintain strong relationships with vendors and suppliers
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Healthcare Administration, or a related field
- Six (6) years of experience in materials management or supply chain operations
- Two (2) years of experience in a leadership or management role in a healthcare setting
