What are the responsibilities and job description for the Elementary Teacher position at Townshend Elementary School?
The Townshend School, serving the preK-grade 5 students of Townshend, Vermont, and some from the nearby commuities of Newfane, Windham and Jamaica, is seeking a creative, organized, and innovative teacher to assume the role of Classroom Teacher, likely for our grade 1 classroom. Our mission is to challenge and nurture every student, while celebrating individuality, creativity and the concept of excellence.
Our small school is located on the idyllic town common, about 15 miles north of Brattleboro, and houses 7 classes preK- grade 5. Class sizes currently range from 12-19 students per class.
Classroom teachers are the primary source of instruction and behavioral and social-emotional support for our students, and the ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the various content areas. This teacher should be innovative, student-centered, and open to engaging students in creative, experiential, project-based learning opportunities. Experience with Bridges Math and EL Education Literacy Curriculum a plus.
Responsibilities include all typical teacher job responsibilities, including:
- creating a warm, positive classroom environment that promotes ideals of equity and inclusivity, and celebrates diversity
- getting to know our amazing students on an individual level by forming positive personal connections as well as through reviewing student data and work samples;
- using the teacher’s knowledge and understanding of the grade level content and vast repertoire of pedagogical approaches to plan and design dynamic learning experiences that incorporate grade-level standards, students’ readiness and learning styles;
- utilizing a variety of formal and informal assessment techniques to monitor student learning against grade level standards as well as monitoring individual student progress to ensure that every student, regardless of background or place on the learning continuum, grows every day, in every way (knowledge of Aimsweb and PAR Benchmark Assessments a plus);
- providing targeted interventions to support students in academic, behavioral, or social-emotional domains where the teacher’s observations and data demonstrate student need (knowledge of MTSS systems a plus);
- encouraging students to become invested in their learning through individual student conferences and goal-setting, by providing high-interest learning activities, and by providing targeted opportunities for student choice/voice in determining what they learn, how they learn, or how they demonstrate their learning;
- fostering positive communication channels with students, and between school and home;
- maintaining accurate records of: student attendance; student needs, interventions, progress and achievement; student participation, engagement and investment.
In short, we seek a teaching superhero with knowledge of elemenytary standards and expectations, who is excited and enthusiastic about learning, and who can inculcate our students with that same passion for learning, self-motivation and confidence so they can become responsible, self-directed, lifelong learners prepared to rise to new challenges and thrive in an unpredictable world.
