What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tax Assessor PT/FT position at Township of Montgomery?
General Statement of Position:
A division of the Finance Department, the Tax Assessor establishes values for all real property within the Township. It is this valuation that is the basis for the Township’s property tax levy.
Responsibilities of the Tax Assessor, in addition to establishing property values, include maintaining municipal tax records, including: property ownership and addresses, values, building and lot dimensions, and tax maps.
The Tax Assessor determines eligibility for all qualified farmland, tax exemptions, and deductions. Tax deductions available include: Senior Citizen, Disability, Surviving spouse, Veteran, and Widow of a Veteran.
Job Duties / Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
· Determine the value of real property.
· Evaluate and supervise the inspections of real estate properties including new construction and demolition.
· Keeps assessment maps up to date, provides appropriate official with necessary data for maintaining a current tax map of the Township as a public record.
· Inspect and examine sales and deeds.
· Examine and process abatement and exemption applications.
· Check and process Senior Citizen and Veteran Deduction applications.
· Process and implement added assessments.
· Tax Appeal preparation and valuation.
· Prepare accurate and informative reports (as needed/requested), and establish and maintain suitable records and files.
· Defense of appeals concerning County Tax Board and State Tax Courts. Prepares information for appeals and gives testimony before county and state tax boards.
· Maintains adequate assessment records of each separate parcel of real property assessed or exempted.
· Supervises the maintenance and balancing of tax books including changes, the preparation of reports on building permits, and the review of real and personal property tax returns.
· Manages staff in a professional manner.
· Trains and develops staff.
· Responsible for answering public inquiries via email, phone and person.
· Stays up-to-date with laws and regulations through continuous education.
· Produces reports and data for Chief Finance Officer as requested.
Required Key Technical Skills & Knowledge:
Experience in valuation of residential, vacant, farm and commercial properties; real property assessment and appraisal
Knowledge of state and municipal laws, rules, regulations applying to assessments for tax purposes
Ability to develop and maintain program for continuous revaluations
Knowledge of BRT Program
Knowledge of MSI requisition system.
Experience with implementing township wide revaluation

Certification / License Required:
NJ Tax Assessors Certificate by NJ Division of Taxation
Valid NJ State driver’s license
Physical Requirements:
Ability to physically inspect real properties and buildings; ability to supervise assessing programs and staff; ability to speak clearly and possess vision and hearing capabilities to perform the essential job functions
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: From $36.55 per hour
