Economics Engineer
Location: Jackson, MI, 49201 (Hybrid – M, T, Th in office & W, F remote)
Contract Duration: Until 02/06/2026 (with high possibility of extension)
Job Overview:
Seeking a highly skilled Economics Engineer to join our team. This role involves conducting economic and engineering analyses to support various energy projects, including levelized cost of energy modeling, power purchase agreement pricing analysis, and ad hoc assessments related to energy and capacity markets. The ideal candidate will be responsible for creating, maintaining, and improving organizational processes while applying principles of energy economics, market integration, risk and reliability assessments, and environmental analyses.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform economic justification and analysis for company strategies related to new generation resources, electric vehicle growth, customer electrification, and grid modernization.
- Support renewable energy initiatives, including solicitations, power purchase agreements, and regulatory filings.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to discuss and improve existing and potential engineering projects.
- Present technical findings to senior leadership, ensuring economic strategies align with regulatory and legislative standards.
- Monitor and evaluate external market forces that impact utility operations and business strategies.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory, legal, and customer requirements through documentation and testing activities.
- Conduct advanced economic modeling and analytical assessments, primarily using Microsoft Excel.
- Write reports, compile data, and develop presentations to support testimony and exhibits related to electrical engineering projects.
- Design and develop model simulations of electrical systems and perform in-depth analyses using specialized software.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program OR an Engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program with a Professional Engineering (PE) license.
- 2–4 years of experience with Microsoft Excel conducting advanced economic modeling and analytical assessments.
- Experience in cost estimation, financial analysis, and budgeting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for foundational economic modeling and analysis.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a high level of attention to detail.
- Knowledge of regional transmission operator (RTO) market operations and utility business practices.
- Experience in data management and organization.
- Basic knowledge of engineering principles and the economics of electric power generation.
Preferred Skills:
- Understanding of cost control and financial data analysis.
- Familiarity with complex pricing terms and capacity market analysis.
- Ability to develop, interpret, and present technical results effectively.
- Experience with advanced analytical tools beyond Microsoft Excel.
