Summary: This position has lead person responsibilities in the crating and shipping area. This position is responsible for constructing crates or boxes, packing products, requisitioning transportation from freight carriers and completing necessary paperwork to ship products domestically and internationally by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Review orders, purchase orders and/or emails to create required documentation, labels etc., for domestic and international freight shipping of machinery and products.
  • Uses software, email or phone to contact carrier representatives to arrange for freight pick up.
  • Marks and affixes shipping labels and documentation on crates, cartons or pallets correctly identifying the commodities shipped.
  • Determines proper shipping method based on equipment type and order requirements. LTL, FTL, Air, Ocean.
  • Measures equipment and constructs wood crates to securely package freight. Prepares units for shipment in either boxes, pallets or crates.
  • Inserts items into containers and packs units as specified for secure shipping to customers.
  • Compares identifying information, counts, weighs, or measures items of incoming and outgoing shipments to verify information against bills of lading, invoices, orders, or other records.
  • Performs other clerical tasks such as typing correspondence, responding to customers, carriers, freight forwarders and representatives. Performs copying and scanning documents, entering data into systems, updating production schedule and keeping files.
  • Manages LTL common carrier vendors and brokers to ensure prompt and quality service. Negotiates shipment rates and compares rate quotes between vendors.
  • Initiates freight claims with carriers if damage to shipment occurs.
  • Maintains inventory of shipping materials and supplies.
  • Operates power industrial equipment such as forklifts, cranes and pallet jacks to move, convey, or hoist shipments on to trucks or to different work areas.

  • Assume departmental lead in the absence of direct supervision.
  • Trains employees who are assigned to work in the department.

This job has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but may indirectly supervise or coordinate personnel and job functions in order to complete work in the department.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:
Six to twelve months experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to read a tape measure.

Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills:
Basic computer knowledge, including MS Office.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Forklift license is required.

Other Qualifications:
Must be willing work overtime on an as-needed basis to maintain production deadlines. Must be willing to train other employees and demonstrate leadership abilities.
