We are looking for an experienced, effective, and technically savvy principal engineer to advance Tract’s capabilities in developing co-located datacenter power solutions. This will include assessing the capabilities of, and building partnerships with third party power generation vendors, and owning the long-term development of a datacenter power generation offering. Specifically, this role will focus on developing, owning and operating behind-the-meter power generation solutions for data center campuses.

The Principal Engineer will play a key role in overseeing the design, development, and optimization of utility scale power generators, electrical systems and controls. The position requires deep technical expertise, leadership skills, and a proven ability to work on complex power generation projects, interconnected to the grid or behind-the-meter. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in electrical engineering and controls within the power generation sector, including work with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), electric utilities, non-utility generators, or oil and gas companies.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead Engineering Efforts: Provide technical leadership and ownership for power generation electrical systems, including the design, specification, and integration electrical equipment and controls for power plants, including both new builds and upgrades.
- Electrical & Control Systems Expertise: Offer hands-on expertise in electrical and control systems for power generation equipment, including generators, transformers, switchgear, protective relays, control panels, and SCADA systems.
- System Design & Optimization: Lead the design and implementation of plant electrical and control systems, ensuring systems are optimized for efficiency, reliability, and safety.
- Power Generation Systems: Select and lead integration of thermal power generation sources including combustion turbines.
- Project Management: Manage multiple projects simultaneously, including coordinating with cross-functional teams, managing timelines, and ensuring quality control throughout the project lifecycle.
- Troubleshooting & Problem Solving: Troubleshoot complex electrical and control system issues in the field, providing innovative solutions to ensure uninterrupted power generation.
- Compliance & Standards: Ensure all systems comply with industry standards, regulations (e.g., NERC, IEEE, IEC), and safety codes. Stay abreast of evolving industry regulations and integrate them into system designs and practices.
- Mentorship & Training: Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and training to junior engineers and technical staff. Foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the team.
- Customer Interaction: Collaborate with internal stakeholders, customers, and vendors to ensure that all electrical systems meet performance specifications and operational requirements.
- Documentation & Reporting: Prepare detailed engineering reports, technical specifications, and project documentation, including commissioning, testing, and system performance data.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or a closely related field and military experience). A Master's degree is preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 10 years of direct "hands-on" experience in power generation electrical equipment and controls, specifically with OEMs, electric utilities, non-utility generators, or oil and gas companies.
- Expertise in Power Generation Systems: Extensive and demonstrable experience with electrical equipment used in power generation (e.g., generators, transformers, switchgear) and control systems (e.g., PLCs, SCADA, DCS).
- Knowledge of Industry Standards: Familiarity with industry standards, such as NERC, IEEE, IEC, and experience with electrical safety regulations and practices.
- Project Management Skills: Proven ability to manage complex projects and lead cross-functional teams. PMP or similar certification is a plus.
- Strong Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to assess complex electrical systems and resolve technical issues quickly and efficiently.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Experience preparing and presenting technical reports, proposals, and recommendations.
- Travel: Willingness to travel to power generation facilities, customer sites, and project locations as needed.Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Professional Engineering License (PE): Current and valid Professional Engineer license.
- Familiarity with the latest advancements in power generation controls and digitalization (e.g., predictive maintenance, smart grids).
- Expertise in commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting electrical and control systems in the field.
- Comfortable with ambiguity as data center and power generation industries mature together.
