Job Description
The HVAC Installer / Service Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in residential and light commercial settings. This role requires technical expertise, strong problem-solving skills, and excellent customer service abilities.
Key Responsibilities
Installation
Install HVAC systems, including furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, ductwork, and ventilation systems.
Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
Ensure installations comply with local codes, manufacturer specifications, and industry standards.
Test system functionality and performance after installation.
Maintenance
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on HVAC systems.
Clean, inspect, and replace system components such as filters, motors, and coils.
Diagnose potential issues and recommend corrective actions to prevent breakdowns.
Service & Repair
Troubleshoot and repair HVAC systems and components.
Replace defective parts and test equipment to ensure proper functionality.
Program thermostats and other system controls.
Provide emergency repairs as needed.
Customer Interaction
Communicate effectively with customers to explain system issues and recommend solutions.
Provide cost estimates for repairs and installations.
Educate customers on system operation, maintenance tips, and energy efficiency practices.
Compliance & Safety
Follow all safety protocols and wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
Adhere to OSHA standards, building codes, and environmental regulations.
Maintain a clean and safe work area.
Qualifications
Education & Certifications
High school diploma or GED required; technical school training preferred.
EPA Section 608 Certification (Type I, II, III, or Universal) required.
Additional certifications (e.g., NATE, HVAC Excellence) are a plus.
Experience
at least 2 years of experience in HVAC installation, maintenance, or repair.
Proficiency with HVAC diagnostic tools and equipment.
Residential New construction and light commercial work are a plus but not required.
Skills & Abilities
Strong understanding of HVAC systems and components.
Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Physical ability to lift heavy equipment, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces or various weather conditions.
Tools & Technology
Familiarity with HVAC software and tools, including pressure gauges, leak detectors, and multimeters.
