Trade Media Hui is hiring an associate editor with outstanding writing, editing and creative skills for our house magazines, special projects and online content. Candidates should possess exceptional planning, organizational and management skills with the ability to work comfortably under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
Top candidates will demonstrate a good sense of what makes an interesting angle to a story and juggle the moving parts of publications — planning, coordinating, reviewing and editing content. They should possess a superb command of English (AP Style) with a keen interest in shaping content to its target audience.
ASSOCIATE EDITOR QUALIFICATIONS
Strong writer and reporter who can gather information and produce copy on deadline.
Editorial/writing experience in newspapers, magazines or digital platforms.
Master of grammar.
Knowledge of how to gather facts, ask sources the right questions and produce stories that are accurate and fair.
Strong portfolio or digital record of previously published work.
Proficient in Mac/Apple, Google Workspace, Microsoft Office and virtual conferencing.
Team-oriented, ethical and professional.
Detail-oriented and accurate.
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English or related field.
Knowledge of Hawaii’s construction, building maintenance, real estate development, government, military, hospitality and tourism is ideal but not required.
ASSOCIATE EDITOR JOB DESCRIPTION
Research data, verify information and interview sources on the phone, in-person or in video conferences.
Write business feature stories and news briefs with accuracy and flair.
Use AP Style to edit and proofread Word and PDF documents—on deadline.
Obtain photos and art that pertain to story text.
Meet writing deadlines (weekly and monthly).
Attend weekly meetings with the editorial team to plan stories, share sources and brainstorm.
Communicate daily with editors, writers, sales and production departments in a team-oriented environment.
Work closely with editorial and production teams to produce monthly magazines and special publications.
Attend monthly meetings with sales and editorial teams to plan coverage.
Occasionally shoot photographs of sources, events and places.
Network and maintain relationships with members of the construction, building management and hospitality industries, as well as associated fields.
