Director of Risk and Safety Position Summary
The Risk and Safety Director is responsible for leading the strategic development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the organization's comprehensive risk management, safety, and loss prevention programs within the Traffic Control industry.
Key Responsibilities
Risk Management Strategy and Leadership:
- Lead the development and execution of the company’s overall risk management strategy, ensuring alignment with business goals and industry standards.
- Conduct comprehensive risk assessments to identify potential hazards and threats to both personnel and operations, providing senior management with actionable recommendations for risk mitigation.
- Provide strategic guidance to senior leadership on emerging risks and safety trends in the traffic control industry.
Safety Program Development and Implementation:
- Develop and manage a robust corporate-wide General Safety Program, ensuring safety standards are consistently met.
- Oversee the creation and delivery of training programs to ensure that employees at all levels understand safety procedures, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
- Regularly review and update safety protocols to address new regulatory requirements, emerging risks, and industry innovations.
- Lead company-wide safety initiatives to reduce incidents, accidents, and fatalities, fostering a culture of proactive safety awareness.
- Conduct periodic safety audits, assessments, and inspections, ensuring the company’s adherence to regulatory and safety standards.
- Manage the investigation and resolution of major safety incidents or accidents, ensuring comprehensive root cause analysis and corrective actions are taken.
Loss Prevention:
- Develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive loss prevention strategy to minimize financial and operational losses across the company’s traffic control projects.
- Monitor and assess the condition of traffic control equipment, vehicles, and tools, ensuring proper maintenance schedules and protocols are followed to prevent damage and ensure longevity.
- Identify potential security and theft risks at job sites, warehouses, and storage facilities, implementing strategies to prevent loss and maintain inventory control.
- Lead efforts to minimize equipment and material loss, coordinating with the procurement and inventory teams to monitor the use and storage of resources effectively. Investigate any instances of loss, theft, or damage, leading the resolution process and taking steps to prevent future occurrences.
- Collaborate with the insurance and legal departments to manage claims related to property damage, accidents, and operational losses.
Regulatory Compliance and Reporting:
- Oversee the development and maintenance of all necessary records, documentation, and reporting required for compliance with safety, risk management, and loss prevention regulations (OSHA, etc.).
- Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and environmental laws and regulations at federal, state, and local levels, including customers’ safety protocols, programs, and reporting requirements.
- Prepare detailed and timely reports for the executive leadership team, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies, including incident reports, safety audit results, and risk assessments.
- Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, ensuring that the company is prepared for and successfully passes safety inspections, audits, and regulatory reviews.
Crisis Management and Emergency Response:
- Lead the development and execution of emergency response and disaster recovery plans, ensuring the organization is prepared for all types of on-site emergencies, including accidents, injuries, and natural disasters.
- Coordinate the company’s response to any major safety incidents or emergencies, ensuring effective communication and swift action to mitigate damages.
- Provide crisis management expertise during critical incidents, working with senior management and external authorities to manage the situation and minimize risks.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, risk management, environmental science, construction management, or a related field.
- Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in safety management, risk management, and loss prevention, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role within the Traffic Control, Construction, or related industry.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Risk Manager (CRM), or similar certifications.
- First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
- Extensive experience developing and implementing risk management strategies, safety programs, and loss prevention policies across large-scale operations.
- Proven track record of success in managing safety and risk programs in high-risk environments, with a focus on traffic control, construction, or infrastructure projects.
- Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams and leading company-wide safety and risk initiatives.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to conduct site inspections and assessments, sometimes in challenging weather or environmental conditions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and walk or stand for extended periods during field inspections.
Occassional travel to job sites and other company locations as required.
