SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Aquatics Supervisor, Aquatics Coordinator, and Head Guards, the Lifeguard is responsible for recognizing and responding effectively to emergency situations and the enforcement of rules and regulations of the aquatics facility. Candidates must be able to solve on-the-job issues by utilizing critical thinking and decision making skills and possess the ability to work with diverse populations. Lifeguards are expected to conduct themselves in the utmost professional manner at all times and treat the public and co-workers fairly and respectfully.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The examples of duties below are not intended to be all inclusive:
- Actively guards and scans the pool area at all times when on rotation.
- Recognizes and effectively responds to emergency situations by activating the Emergency Action Plan.
- Minimizes hazardous situations by enforcing rules and regulations that govern the conduct of patrons using the pool and follows. internal policies in order to keep themselves and other employees safe.
- Maintains and cleans the aquatics facilities, including locker rooms, pool deck, guard office, storage, chemical and mechanical rooms, activity pool, lap pool, steam room, sauna, hot tub, and slides.
- Maintains lifeguard certification, in accordance with District and StarGuard policies, by attending required trainings and meetings.
- Provide a welcoming environment for all patrons.
- Establishes and maintains a working environment conducive to positive morale and teamwork.
- Must maintain a positive and respectful attitude while engaged in stressful and/or controversial situations with patrons and co-workers.
- Dress and appearance are consistent with Aquatics department standards including uniform requirements and personal hygiene.
- Learns, understands, and follows the TPRD and Trails Recreation Center established Core Values and Mission statement.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff and general public.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Possess skills to maintain a safe environment, as well as performing quality work.
- Reliable transportation or a means to making it to work shifts on time.
- Ability to understand, comprehend, and follow all policies and procedures as well as verbalized and written instructions directed by management.
- Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings, mornings, weekends and holidays.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & ENVIRONMENT
- Ability to react to emergency situations by quick movements, strenuous activity and, on occasion, assist or lift persons in distress of varying weights.
- Required to remain alert to dangerous situations while sitting, standing or walking for various lengths of time.
- Must be able to swim 300 yards, tread water for 2 minutes (using legs only) and retrieve a brick from the bottom of the pool and swim back to the starting point with the brick out of the water.
- Ability to talk to and/or hear managers, co-workers and general public.
- Ability to lift, carry, transport aquatics equipment or other objects up to 50 lbs assisted.
- Ability to deal with moderate to high stress situations at times and maintain a positive attitude.
- Noise level is typically moderate to high; water and humid conditions exist.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- StarGuard Lifeguard or Shallow Water Lifeguard training certification including CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid required. (Free training will be provided for applicants who are not currently certified).
- Must be available to work a minimum of 10 hours per week.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous lifeguarding experience.
