SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Fitness & Wellness Supervisor, the group fitness instructor is responsible for leading group exercise classes in an enthusiastic, fun and safe manner, while providing a welcoming and motivational atmosphere, which inspires participants to improve their physical and mental health.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Lead scheduled classes beginning and ending on time; provides adequate warm-up, exercises, stretching and cool down.
- Instructs patrons on effective workout methods; educates on proper techniques, demonstrates exercises; identifies different muscle groups and teaches appropriate methods to strengthen specific muscles
- Prepare appropriate equipment, music and present choreography of class routines
- Ensures that safety standards are met and that department and facility policies are adhered to
- Must be able to understand and teach target and recovery heart rates and a participant’s RPE
- Ability to teach modifications for each exercise performed in class to meet any fitness level
- Practice good personal health and fitness habits
- Stay current on industry trends
- Must possess teamwork abilities and be willing to help other instructors when needed
- Dress and appearance are consistent with department standards including professionalism and personal hygiene.
- Attend staff meetings & trainings
- Assist in the planning and implementation of group exercise special events
- Maintain attendance records for class
- Carries out first aid or emergency procedures as directed
- Maintain communication with Fitness & Wellness management regarding equipment needs, patron concerns and incidents/accidents during class
- Promote various APRD recreation sponsored programs through aerobics classes
- Maintain current certifications in CPR, First Aid and Aerobics
- Must maintain a positive and friendly attitude while engaged in stressful and/or controversial situations with patrons and co-workers
- Establishes and maintains a working environment conducive to positive morale, individual style, quality, creativity and teamwork.
- Complies with department and District rules and regulations, policies and procedures
- Performs various other duties as assigned
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS, ABILITIES
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff and general public
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Possess skills to maintain a safe environment, as well as performing quality work
- Ability to understand, comprehend and follow all policies and procedures as well as verbalized and written instructions directed by management
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Required to walk, stand, sit, use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms
- Required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and must aide or assist participants
- Ability to talk and/or hear patrons, managers and co-workers
- Ability to see objects closely and at a distance
- Must have a high degree of energy, be physically fit, and have the endurance to complete the workout.
- Ability to deal with moderate to high stress situations at times and maintain a positive attitude

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must possess current National Fitness Certification (AFAA or ACE preferred) and/or 200 Hour Yoga Certification.
- 1 year experience in group fitness instruction and/or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Comprehension of strength training and cardiovascular exercise; basic knowledge of anatomy, exercise physiology, kinesiology, mechanical functions of the body and injury prevention
- Knowledge of group fitness teaching strategies and the incorporation of music, tempo, cueing technique, and rhythm
- Ability to modify exercise programs for special populations
- CPR and First Aid certification required upon hire
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Auditions/Observations may be required
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Ability to work a flexible schedule including mornings, evening, weekends and holidays
Salary : $20 - $30
