SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Aquatics Supervisor, the Swim Instructor is responsible for the overall execution and instruction of District learn to swim programs including, but not limited to, parent & tot, preschool, youth, and adult level classes for the Trails Recreation Center. Swim Instructors are expected to create a safe, open, and positive environment and always conduct themselves in the utmost professional manner and treat the public and co-workers with fairness, equality, and respect.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The examples of duties below are not intended to be all inclusive:
- Instructs all levels of swim lessons in the learn-to-swim program according to American Red Cross and Arapahoe Park and Recreation District’s curriculum.
- Constantly is alert and aware of the whereabouts of class members when teaching class.
- Completes all paperwork and student progress reports in a neat and timely manner; submits appropriate course records at the conclusion of each session, in accordance with American Red Cross Guidelines.
- Attends and participates in monthly staff meetings and instructor in-service trainings.
- Prevents accidents through correct teaching techniques and procedures.
- Maintains order in class, foresees possible trouble, and takes steps to prevent trouble.
- Maintains cleanliness and organization in the pool area by putting away all equipment in the proper location at the end of each shift.
- Maintains an acceptable appearance at all times in both uniform and personal hygiene.
- Provides excellent customer service to both internal and external customers through a variety of communication methods including over the telephone and in-person.
- Establishes and maintains a working environment conducive to positive morale and teamwork.
- Must maintain a positive and friendly attitude while engaged in stressful and/or controversial situations with patrons and co-workers
- Learns, understands, and follows the APRD and Trails Recreation Center established Core Values and Mission statement.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
- Knowledge of principles and techniques of teaching all levels through StarGuard Elite training.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Aquatics Supervisor, Aquatics Coordinator, Lifeguards, District staff, and the general public.
- Possess skills to maintain a safe environment and performing quality work.
- Ability to manage the public in all situations including emergencies.
- Must have good oral and written communication skills.
- Be conscious of maintaining a safe environment.
- Have reliable transportation or a means to make it to work shifts on time.
- Must be available to work a minimum of 10-15 hours a week including nights and weekends.
- Be able to understand, comprehend, and follow all written policies and procedures.
- Ability to comprehend all directions given by management and to complete them in compliance.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Ability to move about the building and grounds in a quick manner.
- May require long periods of standing.
- Ability to stand, reach, climb and stoop or kneel.
- Ability to talk and/or hear language from patrons, managers, or groups of people.
- Ability to lift, carry, transport aquatics equipment or other objects up to 50 lbs assisted.
- Ability to see objects closely and at a distance.
- Ability to deal with moderate to high stress situations at times and maintain a positive attitude.
- The noise level is typically moderate to high; water and humid conditions exist.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Current Water Safety Instructor, lifeguard, or equivalent and CPR/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer certifications required.
Salary : $16 - $25
