Position Summary
The Switch Technician is responsible for coordinating activities of the switch-engine crew within the yard, railroad, industrial plant, or similar location. Coordinate activities of workers engaged in railroad traffic operations, such as the makeup or breakup of trains, yard switching, and review train schedules and switching orders. Interpret train orders, electronic or manual signals, and railroad rules and regulations.
They must follow all company guidelines and safety rules when performing their duties.

Skills/Specifications
- Conducts the inspection of couplings, air hoses, handbrakes, and mechanical equipment to ensure efficient and safe train operation.
- Directs and instructs workers engaged in yard activities, such as switching tracks, coupling, and uncoupling cars, and routing inbound and outbound traffic.
- Moves cars to fit planned train configurations, combining or separating cars to make up or break up trains.
- Document and prepare reports of accidents, unscheduled stops, or delays.
- Inspects each car periodically during runs.
- Observes yard traffic to determine tracks available to accommodate inbound and outbound traffic.
- Instruct workers to set warning signals in front and at rear of trains during emergency stops.
- Inspect freight cars for compliance with sealing procedures, and record car numbers and seal numbers.
- Maintain a clean workspace.
- Other duties and projects as assigned by the Repair Manager, Repair Supervisor or Team Leader.
- High School diploma or GED.
- Ability to read and comprehend work orders.
- Dependable. Meets standards of punctuality and attendance.
- Mechanically inclined and willingness to learn different tasks.
- Complies with all safety rules and procedures.
- Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to; eye safety glasses, work boots and the ability to wear a respirator.
- The ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials for more than 90% of the workday.
- Working around heavy moving equipment with intermittent exposure to vibration when using impact tools.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Work in elevated heights and confined spaces. Able to navigate scaffolds, floors, ladders, and walking surfaces that are uneven.
- The ability to sustain mental and visual attention to details for sustained periods of time.
- WORK SITE ENVIRONMENT
- Must always comply with all safety requirements and lead by example regarding safety.
- Primary work environment subject to extreme heat or cold for considerable amounts of time. Must dress accordingly.
- Hearing protection shall be required in certain designated areas to noise levels greater than 80 decibels.
- Scaffolds, floors, ladders, and walking surfaces may be uneven.
