What are the responsibilities and job description for the Technician I (Utility Locator) position at TransCore?
TransCore (TCI), a subsidiary of ST Engineering, is hiring three Utility Locator (Technician I) to join our team in Tampa, Florida
Summary: The Technician I (Utility Locator) determine where existing underground utilities (such as fiber optic cable, electric power, gas, water, and sewer systems) are located. The Utility Locator may use electronic detection equipment in their work, may regularly be exposed to heat, rain, and other elements of outdoor weather, and may be required to perform physical activities such as using a shovel to unearth utilities as well.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Responsible for the correct, safe, and efficient locating of underground utilities, including fiber optic cable, telecommunications, electric power, gas, water, and sewer systems.
- Reading maps and blueprints to determine where utilities are located.
- Taking time to thoroughly search for underground utilities in an area, accurately marking the location, completing the necessary paperwork, and photographing each locate.
Required Skills & Abilities:
- Proficient with MS Office Suite (word, excel, outlook)
- Be able to complete and pass a Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) background check.
- Must successfully complete required background / drug screening that TransCore initiates as part of the hiring process; additionally, when required by project, must successfully complete a State Law Enforcement Radio System (SLERS) background screen.
- Be able and willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Previous outdoor experience is a plus!
- Be able to work overtime and weekends (as needed)
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record; driving is required for the position.
Desired Skills & Abilities:
- Maintenance of Traffic Certification preferred but not required.
- Ability to read roadway plans, create/close work orders.
- Ability to safely work in aerial lifts including bucket trucks of various heights (40ft up to 80ft)
Education and experience:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
- Typically requires 2 years-experience performing utility locates.
