Job Description:
Broadway Now! is an After School Musical Theater Program for elementary students in grades 2-6 in the San Bernardino City Unified School District. It is run by acclaimed theater, film, and television actor, Tony Plana through his organization, Transforming Arts & Minds. We are looking for an experienced public school theatre arts educator who will help oversee our teachers and students in completing their program. This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to incorporate their love of musical theatre education with the challenge of serving students across multiple schools.
The successful candidate will have the following responsibilities:
1. Ensuring the efficacy of our musical theatre curriculum in multiple schools district wide. This will include teacher training and development, regular classroom observations and follow-up training, daily and weekly communication in support of all teachers in the program, and regular monitoring of curricular effectiveness.
2. Promoting the after school musical theatre programs through promotional school assemblies at each school and attendance at back to school nights.
3. Maintaining enrollment through effective teacher training and regular parent communication. 4. Regular communication with the school principals in the program, including principal meetings before the program begins and regular updates throughout the school year.
5. Maintaining a positive relationship between the SBUSD’s Extended Learning program (EXL) and our musical theatre program.
6. Ensuring successful completion of the program’s culminating performances. This will include, but not be limited to:
a. Selecting appropriate performance material with marquee value to generate student
enthusiasm
b. Effective staging of the performances
c. Technical proficiency of lights, sound, costume, props, and scenery,
d. Successful demonstration of student learning in the three components of musical theater:
Acting, Singing, Dancing
e. Effective front of house and house management for culminating performances
f. Effective performance etiquette for all elements of the performances.
The successful candidate must possess and demonstrate the following skills:
1. Effective verbal (written and spoken) and nonverbal communication.
2. Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with successful outcomes.
3. Extensive working knowledge of best practices in education, specifically for younger students between grades 3 and 6. This working knowledge should include best practices in:
a. Classroom management
b. Community building
c. Curriculum delivery (including the unique needs of Musical Theatre Curriculum delivery)
d. Parent communication
e. Safety
4. Ability to teach and develop other teachers in delivering the best practices mentioned above.
5. Extensive knowledge and experience in producing and directing musical theatre performances. (Please submit a Theatre Resume showing directing experience with your application.)
6. Understanding of the use of sound, lights, costumes, and scenery in musical theatre performances.
a. Working knowledge of technical theatre and design is preferable.
Candidates with the following qualifications will receive priority consideration:
1. A Bachelor’s degree in Theatre or Theatre Education
2. 5 or more years teaching musical theatre in a school setting
3. 5 or more years directing musical theatre productions
Candidates must also be available afternoons and early evenings as this is an after-school program. You must also have reliable transportation in order to be present at multiple school locations in the San Bernardino Unified School District. 30 hrs per week. Salary range: $35-40 per hour. Spanish speaking a plus.
