Job Title : Maintenance Supervisor FLSA Status : Exempt

Department : Maintenance Date : 01 / 21 / 2025

Reports To : Maintenance Manager

Subject to Collective Bargaining Agreement

Summary : Under the direction of the Maintenance Manager, this position directly supervises mechanics and fueler / cleaners, and other maintenance personnel involved in the maintenance of the fleet and facilities. Exhibits a continual commitment to, and support of, the essential mission of the organization – providing a Safe, Friendly, Reliable, Clean / Comfortable, and Cost-Effective Transportation System.

Hours : 4 P.M to 12 A.M.

Communication :

  • Performs work and operates equipment safely by departmental and industry-standard operating procedures, ensures the safe work habits of maintenance personnel, and corrects any unsafe work condition or practice(s).
  • Participates in monthly safety meetings for maintenance personnel and identifies training necessary to maintain safe standards.
  • Interact with dispatch supervisors to remedy issues and quickly restore bus availability when buses are removed from route.
  • Maintain the safe flow of work during equipment breakdowns, ensure repairs are scheduled and tag out / lock out unsafe equipment.
  • Plans, directs and supervises the activities of service workers.
  • Plans, directs, and supervises technicians' activities in the Maintenance Manager's absence.
  • Nightly, complete, publish, and distribute vehicle status sheet.
  • Enforces work policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Implements, with clear communication to all impacted employees, policies, and procedures to support the activities of the Maintenance Department.
  • Be able to write understandable reports or memos for use by employees or managers.

Management & Leadership :

  • Supervise cleaning and fueling operations for the fleet of the transit and paratransit vehicles.
  • Creates schedules for fueling, and rotating personnel between fueling and cleaning.
  • Assign buses to individual cleaners on a rotating schedule basis.
  • Ensures electric buses are properly charged for service next day.
  • Supervises workflow in the shop during the absence of the maintenance manager
  • Monitor payroll for discrepancies and ensure compliance with VRT attendance policies and procedures.
  • Order and manage inventory of cleaning supplies used to maintain the cleanliness of fleets.
  • Observe, motivate, and evaluate cleaning and fueling operations.
  • During the absence of the maintenance manager, schedule preventive maintenance and repairs of transit and paratransit fleets.
  • Maintains proficiency in Oracle Based Fleet Maintenance software.
  • Maintains a consistent and regular presence over fueling crew.
  • Inspects facilities, equipment, and utility systems to determine needed repairs and maintenance.
  • Prioritizes needs and adjusts daily work plans as needed.
  • Ensures cleanliness of fleet and facility through daily evaluation of fleet, facility, and grounds.
  • Monitor employee performance and productivity and recommend process or training changes to improve results.
  • Administrative :

  • Ensures compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, and policies that impact the transit system.
  • Support the development and continuation of narrative and statistical records and necessary historical files related to vehicle inspections, maintenance, repairs, personnel, financial activity and assigned duties per the Maintenance Manager.
  • Updates, utilizes, and maintains the computerized maintenance programs
  • Ensures accurate time reporting on employee timecards.
  • Performs other duties as required and / or assigned.
  • Updates daily work orders with accuracy and completeness in the absence of the Maintenance Manager.
  • Critical Job Requirements

  • Education : Work requires knowledge of a job-related vocational, technical, or administrative nature that may be acquired by completion of an associate’s degree (AA) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school. Certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
  • Supervisory Leadership : Work requires supervising and / or monitoring performance for an assigned group of employees within the department; providing input on hiring, performance, promotion, corrective / disciplinary action, achievement of work objectives / effectiveness, and as needed, realignment of work. Monitoring each maintenance employees’ performance relative to work orders, service calls, radio procedures, and interaction with operators and maintenance personnel; document and report unusual situations or deviations from transit policy to the Maintenance Manager.
  • Freedom to Act : This position receives general direction / supervision. The employee normally performs the duties of the job by following established standard operating procedures (SOP), established policies and procedures, and / or established acceptable practices. Requires the ability to exercise considerable initiative and independent analytical and evaluative judgment, demonstrating consistency, reliability, and a positive work environment. Comprehension of the fact that the consequences of his / her decisions and work performance impact the entire transit system, particularly the passenger-customer base.
  • Communication Skills : Ability to read, analyze and interpret papers, business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures / manuals, and / or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, prepare business correspondence, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from various groups including, managers, vendors, customers, and the public. Ability to dispatch via mobile radio or telephone to mechanics in a timely manner to meet performance requirements.
  • Human Collaboration Skills : Possess good teamwork skills and the ability to effectively work with all employees. Contact may involve support of controversial positions, negotiation of sensitive issues or preserving confidential information. Promote a harassment-free environment, support a diverse workforce, and show respect and sensitivity for cultural differences. Knowledge of AA / EEO policy, programs and requirements.
  • Computer Skills : Ability to perform data entry, basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, and / or other computer database experience.

  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations – Must have clear motor vehicle record and possess a valid Class B CDL with airbrake and passenger endorsements . Must participate in and successfully complete an annual physical examination showing capability to perform essential duties, this may include a drug test as requested. This position is subject to the successful completion of a criminal background check.
