TITLE:  BUS DRIVER 

 

LOCATION:  Transportation

 

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 21,000 students and 60 different languages are spoken in the homes of our students. KCKPS is home to Sumner Academy, the #6 highest rated

 

High School in the Nation and #1 High School in Kansas according to the US News rankings.

With Head Start/preschools, 28 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, and 5 college and career academies/high schools, we are the fifth largest district in the state of Kansas and our student population is approximately 56% Hispanic, 24% African American, 9% White, and 6% Asian. To serve our students, the district employs approximately 4,000 employees including more than 1,800 teachers.              

 

JOB GOAL

To safely transport school students.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintain a state of readiness and alertness necessary to safely operate a school bus.
  • Maintain a level of physical fitness as required under state law and district policies/guidelines.
  • Operate school bus in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Substitute route driving as assigned.
  • Follow route sheet and maintain time schedule on route.
  • Maintain student discipline.
  • Maintain daily bus inspection log.
  • Conduct inspection of interior of bus after each student run for students, belongings, or damage.
  • Report needed repair and/or other bus maintenance problems.
  • Fuel vehicle
  • Follow all laws, regulation, policies relating to the operation of a school bus.
  • Weekly: Accurate time accounting for payroll  Monthly: Submit accurate student load count.  Submit accurate bus mileage report.  Submit other accurate reports as designated.
  • Periodic: Submit accurate stop counts. Maintain driver eligibility.  Fill in as a bus aide.
  • Other duties as needed as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Ability to read and write.
  • Meet state of Kansas physical requirements as required in Kansas School Transportation Regulations.
  • Obtain a commercial driver’s license
  • Pass drug screening test.
  • Pass school bus driving test and tests for first aid, CPR, and defensive driving.
  • Ability to drive any size or configuration of bus in the fleet which would include but not be limited to 71 passenger buses; 22 passenger buses; and buses with wheel chair lifts and security strap systems.
  • Possess the following physical attributes required to successfully operate any bus as well as evacuate the bus efficiently and safely in an emergency:
  • Full physical requirements necessary to holding a commercial driver’s license, including normal hearing, vision correctable to 20/20, full range of vision and absences of medical or legal restrictions or impairments prohibiting the holding of a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires long periods of sitting while driving, and bending and lifting a minimum of 50 pounds or more.
  • Ability to do repetitive motions with the right arm, leg and shoulder.
  • The ability to maneuver up and down aisle
  • The ability to go up and down steps entering the bus.
  • The ability to navigate and strap wheel chairs securely.

 

COMMUNICATION / ORGANIZATION: Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.

Performs other related work as required.

 

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: emergency evacuation techniques; area streets and locations; basic vehicle maintenance; first aid; health standards and hazards; pertinent codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; safe driving practices; safety practices and procedures; two way radio communication; and utilizing wheelchairs, tie downs, child safety seats, lifts, safety vests, etc. (by assignment).

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. 

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling some climbing and balancing some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 80% sitting, 10% walking, and 10% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness. . The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  The employee must occasionally push items of 50 pounds such as pushing on a bike or a wheelchair.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and is a standard acceptable level for this environment. Is directly responsible for students’ safety, work output and well-being.

 

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, and administration.

 

TYPES OF DRIVING POSITIONS

 

Regular Route Driver: Route assignment typically consists of a morning and afternoon route.  Additional Noon and Activities runs are assigned by potential and seniority and are considered a regular portion of the driver’s daily route.

 

Late Regular Route Driver: No AM run. Route assignment consists of Kindergarten (Noon) and PM route with additional time acquired daily by Activity assignment. Available AM time may be assigned as extra duty with possible field trip assignments or call in relief driver assignments as available and/or necessary.

 

Activity Relief Trip Driver: Route assignment consists of regular AM route. Driving duty during regular PM route time is reserved for field trip assignments. Field trip assignments are priority only during the PM run time. Mid day and night field trip assignments are assigned by potential/seniority. Drivers are assigned substitute route assignments during PM run time if trips are not scheduled.

 

Regular Relief Substitute Drivers (full time): Driving assignment consists of covering routes during driver absences. Assignments may change daily or be long-term temporarily assigned. Additional driving hours may be acquired by substituting on noon routes or activity routes or with possible field trip assignments.

 

Bus Driver Relief Call In Substitute Drivers: Drivers are on call at specific times and available to perform substitute driving during driver absences, and may also be available for long-term or partial day assignments.

 

New Hires Route Drivers: Assignments consist of substitute driving, regular bus assignments, or long-term sub assignment. Regular assignment will be considered a temporary assignment (TA) until it is determined whether the route is available for permanent assignment. Drivers successfully completing the probationary period may be assigned a permanent route assignment based on route availability. Drivers with TA assignments may be reassigned as necessary if the route is bid out by a higher seniority driver.

 

All driving positions include additional duties and responsibilities as necessary in conjunction with daily assignments. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to: mileage reporting, student reporting, bus housekeeping; stand by assistance, maintaining current certifications and other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director.

 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  186 Days
