What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanic position at Transportation Department?

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Maintain and repair all types of vehicles in the district to ensure proper performance and safety. Work independently on projects assigned, following established procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
High School diploma or G.E.D.
Valid Texas CDL driver’s license (class B) with Passenger Endorsement
Certified Texas Vehicle Safety Inspector
Texas School Bus Driver’s Certification
Air Conditioning Certification
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently
Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair
Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts
Experience:
Two years experience in vehicle repair and maintenance procedures
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
1. Maintenance and Repair
1.1 Evaluate mechanical and electrical problems in vehicles using diagnostic equipment.
1.2 Rebuild, replace or repair vehicle parts such as engines (gasoline and diesel), brakes (mechanical and air), transmissions, cooling systems, suspension systems, electrical assemblies, and accessories.
1.3 Analyze engine performance and tune.
1.4 Perform preventive and routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment based on established schedules.
1.5 Perform state safety inspections for all district vehicles.
2. Safety
2.1 Operate tools and equipment inspections for all district vehicles.
2.2 Assist in keeping shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
2.3 Obtain Texas Motor Vehicle Safety Inspection License.
3. Driving
3.1 Operate buses as needed.
4. Other
4.1 Complete and maintain records on work performed and parts used.
4.2 Work irregular hours as needed.
4.3 Exemplify high standards of ethical conduct as described in board policy.
4.4 Observe professional and ethical standards, in accordance with generally accepted community standards and the Professional Educators Code of Ethics.
4.5 Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
None
EQUIPMENT USED:
Small hand tools, drills, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, torch, jacks, and lift equipment.
Operate bus.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mental Demands/Physical/Environmental Factors:
Ability to work independently, following established procedures. Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching. Work outside and inside, around moving objects, vehicles and machinery with moving parts. Exposed to dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline and diesel fuel. Ability to operate motor vehicle.
