School Crossing Guard
Job Summary:
To ensure the safety of school children when they go to and return from school. The School Crossing Guard will escort children at a designated controlled school crossing location during the school year.
Reports to: Director of Transportation
Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age and older.
- Must complete a finger-print background check
- Must have physical abilities to meet job requirements.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Duties are not limited to, but shall include the following)
- Assist children in crossing roadway at a designated controlled school crossing location (Light Plant Rd. and Hwy. 516).
- Must be able to walk pedestrians safely across busy intersections, and react safely and decisively to traffic conditions.
- Must be able to display a school crossing stop sign (weighing approximately two pounds) in an upright position so that it is visible to vehicular traffic approaching from all directions while extending the other arm parallel for one minute on a frequent basis.
- Must be continually vigilant of hazards both vehicular and criminal in the area of their crosswalks and must be able to identify vehicles and drivers that violate crosswalk laws or criminal statutes involving children.
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions including rain, snow, wind, and extreme heat and cold conditions.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vison, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Attendance is an essential function of this positions.
- On duty for 1 hour in the mornings (7 – 8 AM) and afternoons (3 – 4 PM) in all weather conditions.
- Maintain good public relations.
- Must be able to avail themselves to testify in court when they are the reporting party in a violation.
- Handle additional duties as assigned.

Certificates, Licenses
Must have current Red Cross First-Aid certification or equivalent and CPR certification or a willingness to obtain this training and certification.

School year, days of duty, and salary determined by district schedule.
Physical Rating Level
This position will require the employee to function at a “Medium” physical capacity as defined by Worker’s Compensation Statutes. “Medium” physical capacity indicates the ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally or up to 25 pounds frequently.
