Mechanic
Job Summary
Under direction of the Head Mechanic, plan and assign the activities of Transportation maintenance personnel in performing skilled maintenance, servicing, and repair work on all district vehicles and school buses.
Reports to: Transportation Director/Head Mechanic
Qualifications
- High school Graduate or GED.
- Must possess a valid class B commercial driver’s license with the proper endorsements and have received required training as a New Mexico State school bus driver or a willingness to obtain this training and certification.
- Must pass a Department of Transportation physical examination by a licensed physician.
- Must pass a substance abuse test as prescribed by local school board policy and state statutes.
- Must have current Red Cross First-Aid certification or equivalent and CPR certification or a willingness to obtain this training and certification.
- Must have a satisfactory driving record and criminal background that reflects a professional driver and meets all district, state, and federal requirements.
- Any combination of education, training, and/or experience, which demonstrates ability to perform the required duties.
- A typical qualifying background would include at least four years experience as a journey level automotive mechanic. Must have also had specialized training in safety maintenance of school buses.
- Prefer ASE certified as Master School Bus Technician.
- Must have knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in vehicle maintenance, servicing, and repair of a variety of vehicles including school buses.
- Have record keeping, supervision, training, and leadership techniques.
- Be knowledgeable of safety requirements for school buses.
- Must have ability to use specialized tools and equipment to successfully perform vehicle maintenance, servicing and repair on a variety of district vehicles, including school buses.
- Maintain accurate records. Plan, organize, and execute responsibilities to meet deadlines. Train, supervise, and evaluate shop employees. Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Must complete a finger-print background check
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Duties are not limited to, but shall include the following):
- Assist in ordering necessary supplies and equipment for garage and shop.
- Make repairs and perform major tune-ups on school buses and district trucks and automobiles.
- Maintain proper forms on all repairs and inspections.
- Answer telephones and radios as needed and to know daily operation of the Transportation Department and fill in as needed.
- Maintain records as needed.
- Have a positive attitude and communicate with students, parents, teachers, co-workers and supervisors.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Additional Responsibilities
- Must be able to obtain Commercial driver’s license within six months of hire.
- Will be required to drive bus and transport students as needed.
- Able to operate lift equipment and securing devices on special needs equipment.
- Become knowledgeable in state and federal requirements for Bus repairs.
- Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.
- Wear protective devices such as back supports, eyewear, and steel toe boots as job condition demands.
- Successfully complete all training programs and all continuing education requirements in a timely and professional manner.
- Knowledge of shop safety.
- Must know how to properly operate and learn all multimedia equipment, and other current technologies.

Term of Employment
Twelve-month employee, 8 hours per day, subject to 24 hours call and salary determined by district schedule.
Evaluation
Performance of duty will be evaluated at least annually in accordance with Aztec School Board Policy.
Physical Rating Level
This position will require the employee to function at a “Very Heavy” physical capacity as defined by Worker’s Compensation Statutes. “Very Heavy” physical capacity indicates the ability to lift over 100 pounds occasionally or up to 50 pounds frequently.
