PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Director of Transportation manages the overall operation of the Transportation Department: assumes the duties and responsibilities as related to supervising and training personnel, dispatching, routing, safety, and scheduling buses.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Certification Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree
- Texas Association for Pupil Transportation Certification preferred
- Possess current Texas Commercial Driver’s License (Class B)
- Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of motor vehicle maintenance and repair
- Knowledge of rules, regulations, and policies governing the student
- Knowledge of funds management
- Management style compatible with the position
- Technology proficient
- Proven skills in leadership, management and team building
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Transportation Director preferred
- Experience and ability to supervise personnel
- Experience in field of fleet management
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in public education preferred
- Experience in training and in management or supervision and knowledge of transportation preferred
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

- Develops a timely and efficient bus schedule which allows students to be transported to and from school in a manner which supports the districts mission
- Coordinates with District personnel the use of Transportation Department vehicles to transport student to special education functions
- Recommends all Transportation Department employees for hire, transfer and promotion
- Develops training manuals and maintenance training records for all Transportation Department drivers
- Communicates and promotes high expectations for staff and employee performance in a supportive way and provides proper recognition of excellence and achievement
- Assesses bus routes and other transportation functions to ensure that maximum safety, service, etc. are being attained, makes adjustments when necessary if maximum potentials are not being reached
- Defines job performance expectations of staff, evaluates job performance, conducts conferences and/or improvement plans to ensure the best operation of the Department
- Prepares an annual budget for the Transportation Department
- Monitors the use, maintenance, and replacement of capital equipment
- Receives and files current enrollment reports (by geographic area)
- Prepares and submits all reports required by the District Board of Trustees and/or the Texas Education Agency
- Reviews and authorizes purchase requisitions for the Transportation Department
- Develops procedures for extra curricular trips involving Transportation Department vehicles
- Ensures that all vehicles in the Transportation Department are adequately maintained
- Establishes guidelines for assigning drivers to extra curricular trips
- Oversees the preventive maintenance schedule for District vehicles
- Ensures that data is maintained in relation to gasoline/propane expenditures per vehicle
- Accepts responsibilities for registering, licensing and maintaining a maintenance log for all District vehicles
- Keeps abreast of current specifications required by the State regarding school buses
- Provides the Purchasing Department with bid specifications when attaining new buses
- Safeguards the transportation inventory and follows appropriate accounting procedures
- Authorizes the payment of purchases made by the Transportations Department
- Coordinates the rental of charter buses and other vehicles used in field trips for District groups
- Maintains records of students participating in District Transportation process
- Ensures that bus drivers are familiar with procedures in dealing with misconduct/conflicts
- Participates in relevant professional growth experiences which expand knowledge of operating the department
- Maintains records on employees which track needs and initiates activities which address such needs
- Demonstrates awareness of school/community needs, and initiates activities which address such needs
- Responds in a positive and professional manner to parents who have problems or express concerns
- Drive a school bus with or without students on board
- Maintains a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
- Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Supervise and evaluate performance of assigned Transportation staff.
Equipment Used:
- Office equipment – personal computer, printer, calculator, multi-line telephone, software programs and peripherals, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position.
- Communication equipment – radio communication equipment, cellular telephone
- Video monitoring equipment
