What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Mechanic III - Transportation/Fleet position at Transportation?
FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE
The purpose of this position is to perform journeyman work in the maintenance and repair of school buses and other automotive equipment of the school district Transportation Department. A person in this position is responsible for identifying, diagnosing, and repairing malfunctions in transportation vehicles and equipment. Distinguishing characteristics of this position include the performance of wrecker service to all roadside breakdowns, accidents, or emergencies; performing major engine and sub-assembly checks; Assist and inspect work of level I and II mechanics
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Identify, diagnose, and repair complex malfunctions on transmissions and engines in school and activity buses, other school vehicles. Work includes checking for any worn components, push rods, valve springs, head assembly, rocker arms, valve seals, head gaskets, and intake gaskets; torques all components to specifications. Also, water pumps, and fuel pumps; checks and replaces timing chain and gears, radiators, hoses, check belts and vacuum hoses, mufflers, converters, tail pipes, king-pins, wheel bearings, tire rods, ball joints, steering gear boxes, power steering pumps, starters, batteries and alternators, brakes, and diesel engine injectors, injector pumps and glow plugs. Documents all repair actions, parts used and labor consumed and provides documentation for forwarding to the administrative clerk for entry into the State Vehicle Fleet Management System.
- Performs all major engine and other sub-assembly checks, repairs or replacements, including replacing cams, lifters, rings, crankshafts, pistons, rod bearings, main bearings, and oil pumps; measures the distance between all bearing parts. Ensures that repaired or replaced equipment meets OSHA and state safety standards.
- Performs minor body repair and complete vehicle painting.
- Completes re-upholstery work and glass replacement, including replacing window latches, side glasses, windshields, mirrors, seat latches, seat cushions, and seat covers.
- Performs/certifies State Department of Motor Vehicle inspections and State Board of Education School Bus Preventive Maintenance checks and repairs.
- Inspect buses to ensure special equipment is on board, such as child restraints and star seats.
- Provide oversight and inspect the work of other mechanics in the repair of complex issues on engines, transmissions, drive terrains, etc. to ensure that buses are safe to transport students.
- Operates wrecker and assists in vehicle recovery and towing.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to successfully operate specialized power tools to recondition complete sub-assemblies, including drill press, impact wrenches, grinders, air gun, air hammer, air chisels, air ratchets, air drills; operates brake lathe, bearing presser, tire machine and forklift.
- Ability to operate a wrecker, fuel truck, school bus, and various fork lifts.
- Ability to use a computer and specialized diagnostic programs and equipment to diagnose problems and run test, for different systems including but not limited to engine, transmission, ABS brakes and electrical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematic diagrams, preventive maintenance print outs, air brake flow charts, diagnostic fault codes, and related vehicle repair manuals.
- Ability to work independently as well as work collaboratively to solve problems, while maintaining effective working relations with peers, supervisors, and subordinates.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalency PLUS five years’ work experience in repair & maintenance of truck equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge & abilities.
- Desirable: AES Certification in Brakes, Suspension & Steering or Drivetrain
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
- NC School Bus Inspection Certificate
- Valid Class A Commercial Drivers License with additional endorsements for tanker combination vehicle.
Pay Grade LD - $3,322.74 Monthly Salary - Full Time Position
