POSITION TITLE: Vehicle Mechanic Foreman
REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation
TYPE: Support
FLSA: Non-exempt
POSITION GOAL: To keep the District’s vehicles and equipment in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions to the education program or the operation of the School District.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise the diagnosing, assigning and repairing of District vehicles and maintenance equipment, and inspect the work of mechanics.
- Establish an efficient and effective system of routing automotive maintenance and preventative care.
- Set up and supervise a system for the receipt and issuance of parts and supplies, inventory, and record maintenance.
- Assist in the recruitment, screening, training, and evaluation of mechanics.
- Promote high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work-connected areas.
- Perform repairs to vehicles as needed to maintain operating excellence.
- Establish a routine for the preparation of all school buses for annual State Police summer inspections.
- Schedule major repairs to all vehicles with outside contractors, if needed.
- Drive school van or bus routes as requested or in an emergency.
- Assist the Director of Transportation in problems pertaining to the Transportation Department, and in writing specifications for District vehicle fleet and equipment.
- Start all vehicles at 5:00 A.M. to prepare for the morning runs and in cold weather.
- Enter data daily in maintenance program to track vehicle work history and materials/parts utilized.
- On call 24/7 to respond to emergencies and breakdowns within school district operations.
- Responsible for the purchasing of parts, materials and supplies for the bus garage.
- Responsible for various line items within the transportation budget and to advise the director of any shortfalls.
- Repair and inspect all vehicles for the Operations Department as well as equipment used by the ground crews.
- Review all invoices for parts and materials and submit same for payment.
- May be asked to report to vehicle accident scene either with the director of transportation or alone to verify vehicle drivability and collect information.
- As an essential employee you will be responsible to assist with clearing the bus lot and vehicles after a weather emergency. Due to the unpredictability of such events this could include nights or weekends and would need to be a priority to assure vehicles are accessible and ready to run on the next school day.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of automotive systems and the ability to explain systems and repairs to others in general terms
- Appropriate technical certifications
- Ability to assist in diagnosing vehicle problems and interpret work orders
- Ability and desire to ensure vehicles are repaired correctly the first time
- Ability to diagnose vehicle problems other than those on the work order or described by a transportation employee
- Ability to estimate the time of service or repair job for purposes of efficient scheduling
- Ability to maintain communication with Service Consultants and Parts Department
- Knowledge of approved and established procedures for warranty repairs and to ensure technicians follow the policies
- Ability to stay current by attending technical training schools and by reading and understanding service manuals, technical bulletins, etc.
- Knowledge of and ability to comply with the quality control & inspection requirements of the School District Transportation Department

Sensory Abilities: Visual acuity to be able to maintain District vehicles and equipment Depth perception to be able to judge distance from objects

Cognitive Ability: Ability to read, write and do simple computation.
Ability to communicate effectively with others.
Ability to follow written and verbal directions.
Ability to perform all repair and new work assigned in skill area with little or no supervision.
Specific Skills: Experience in fleet maintenance
Experience in purchasing and inventory controls
Supervisory experience
Educational Level: High School Diploma or GED
Certified PA S-7 State Inspection Mechanic or agree to obtain and maintain certification
Minimum three (3) years experience in vehicle mechanical upkeep and preventative maintenance
License/Clearance(s): Act 34 - Criminal History Clearance
Act 151 - Child Abuse History Clearance
ACT 114- FBI Fingerprint Criminal History Clearance
Valid Pennsylvania State Driver’s License
Valid Pennsylvania State CDL with Bus Driver endorsement (must possess or be willing to obtain)
Other: Must be able to pass a physical examination
Must be able to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol tests and participate in random selection pool.
Must be willing to attend, at District discretion and expense, technical schools and/or seminars to update knowledge.
