Job Description
Position Title: Operations Specialist
Department: Transportation Department
Reports To: Director of Transportation
Contract: 2025-2026 (244 days)
Ending Date: Until filled
SUMMARY: An Operations Specialist is a vital member of the Transportation Department’s day-to-day operations. The Operations Specialist, under the direction of the Director of Transportation, assists in the coordination of routing, scheduling and other daily operations of the Transportation Department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the daily operation of the dispatch office; monitors two-way radios of District buses for bus problems, accidents, security issues, and promptness of route completion.
- Use computer programs to track bus location, student bus assignment, student contact information and make changes to those programs as needed.
- Assists the Director of Transportation as needed in the effective planning and development of school bus routes.
- Communicates with school site staff, administrators, and parents as instructed by the Director of Transportation to coordinate activities, resolve issues and concerns or questions regarding transportation services currently being provided.
- Assists the Director of Transportation as needed in assigning bus drivers to extra runs outside the normal route schedule. (Field Trips, Athletic Trips, etc.)
- Confers with Shop personnel to maintain awareness of bus availability.
- Assists in the operation and coordination needed for the annual driver training and certification meeting.
- Drive scheduled bus routes as needed in low staffing situations.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalency is preferred. Must possess and maintain a minimum class B CDL, a school bus endorsement, air brake endorsement and passenger endorsement. Applicants must pass a physical, pre-employment drug screen and background check before being eligible for employment.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: The ability to use transportation specific software programs. The ability to communicate clearly and effectively. The ability to interact with members of the public in a courteous and professional manner to include complaints about scheduling and levels and quality of service; the ability to manage students; and capable of responding calmly in emergency situations.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of pre-employment background checks. Appropriate personal and professional conduct at all times around students, other staff members and the general public.
