Mechatronics Engineer
COMPANY OVERVIEW: Trashology is dedicated to resolving the world’s waste dilemma. We are focused on developing technology to divert waste disposal from landfills by replacing conventional harmful landfill practices with highly efficient, clean waste technology. Our technology protects the environment while reducing energy and waste costs. Be a part of an innovative team developing a first of its kind small scale gasification system where your work will have direct impact on the products' success!
WHO WE ARE: We are a mission driven collaborative team that values integrity, transparency, and a strong work ethic in a fast-paced, high energy work environment.
WE ARE SEEKING: A well-rounded Mechatronics Engineer who shares our entrepreneurial energy to support the team’s efforts in adapting our current systems into commercial products. In your role, your duties and responsibility will include the following:
Design & Development
- Design mechanical and electrical systems based on functional specifications and industry best practices
- Program, debug, and troubleshoot PLC-based control logic to fully automate system functions
- Integrate industrial control components—including sensors, motors, valves, and actuators—for precise process control
- Engineer medium- and low-voltage power distribution systems, including polyphase configurations
- Develop and document safety circuits, power/control system designs, and technical specifications
- Lead complex design projects from concept to validated system, independently managing design, prototyping, testing, and evaluation using sound engineering principles
- Apply advanced CAD skills to rapidly transform concepts into mechanically sound designs suitable for fabrication, prototyping, and manufacturing
- Evaluate systems and designs using a variety of data analysis tools (e.g., Excel and other platforms), with the flexibility to adopt new analytical tools as needed
- Provide analytical assessments of mechanical, pneumatic/hydraulic, thermal and control system designs
- Design and execute tests to assess system performance, from prototype through full-scale integration
- Conduct failure mode and effects analyses (FMEA) and root cause analyses (RCA); develop and implement corrective action plans
Hands-On Engineering
- Assemble, troubleshoot, and test mechanical parts and assemblies as well as power systems
- Support fieldwork and installations, including occasional outdoor tasks
- Train technicians on wiring practices, troubleshooting, and system operations
Technical Documentation
- Write and review installation requirements and system documentation
- Generate mechanical drawings, wiring schematics, and build packages using OnShape and AutoCAD
Collaboration & Communication
- Coordinate closely with cross-functional team members on system design and integration
- Develop and communicate cost estimates for engineering work
- Follow all safety protocols and help maintain a culture of safe practices
- Take on additional responsibilities as needed in a dynamic, project-driven environment
The ideal candidate should be able to meet the following requirements:
- BS in Mechatronics Engineering curriculum or 4 years or more of relevant and documented experience with mechanical engineering and automation engineering.
- Experience in commercial product development in an engineering environment, and ideally in the chemical processing industry
- Strong mechanical engineering knowledge and proficiency producing designs with OnShape
- Experience with provisioning PLCs and creating projects for Allen-Bradley (Rockwell) and Inductive Automation Ignition platforms
- Strong understanding of industrial sensors, motors, valves and actuators as well as development of PID control loops
- Experience in writing and debugging ladder logic, structured text, and other ISO 61131-3 languages.
- Strong knowledge of the NFPA 79 and UL 508A standards and their application
- Willingness to support all team members and perform any job function when necessary
- Highly motivated, self-starter with a desire to get tasks done on time and without errors
- Ability to conduct basic physical requirements of climbing ladders, work at elevated heights, ability to lift 40 lbs., and ability to use basic hand tools
